Bangladesh Eliminated from AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers
The Bangladesh under-17 women’s national football team bowed out of the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers following a 3-0 defeat against a formidable Philippines side. This crucial loss marks the end of the group stage journey for the red-and-greens, closing their chapter in the qualification campaign. Meanwhile, securing two successive victories and accumulating 6 points, the Philippines clinched the top spot in the group and advanced directly to the tournament proper. With this commanding finish, they have officially secured their qualification for the main tournament of the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in China in 2027.
From the opening whistle, the young Filipina side applied steady pressure, testing the Bangladeshi defence. However, goalkeeper Meghla Rani Roy stood firm as the ultimate saviour in the early stages. In the 23rd minute, Meghla pulled off a brilliant save, palming away a dangerous shot heading straight for the near post. Just five minutes later, the Philippines threatened again when Arina Sofia unleashed a strike that narrowly missed the far post, flying past the outside of the woodwork to grant Bangladesh a brief sigh of relief.
As play resumed following the scheduled hydration break due to the intense weather conditions, the Bangladeshi side injected a renewed sense of purpose into their gameplay. The team shifted focus toward maintaining better possession and building more structured attacks. This tactical adjustment nearly paid dividends shortly before the interval. In the 43rd minute, Mousumi met a well-placed cross from a teammate with a header, but the effort agonizingly sailed inches wide of the goal.
Frustration peaked for the red-and-greens during the additional time of the first half. Alpi Akter tried her luck from well outside the penalty box, unleashing a powerful left-footed drive that beat the opposition goalkeeper, only to crash flush against the crossbar and rebound into play. Denied by the woodwork, Bangladesh headed into the interval locked in a goalless stalemate despite their valiant efforts.
The second half continued in a tightly contested manner until the deadlock was finally broken in the 73rd minute. A cross swung in from the left flank caused confusion in the penalty area, and a defender failed to make a clean clearance. The loose ball fell kindly to Maya Rose Baskara, who made no mistake in slotting it home to break the resistance and put the Philippines ahead 1-0.
Chasing the game, Bangladesh pushed bodies forward in search of an equaliser, which inevitably left gaps at the back. The Philippines ruthlessly capitalised on these spaces in the closing moments of the match through substitute Noelie Granzer, who scored a decisive brace. In the 90th minute, Granzer doubled the lead with a sharp diagonal shot from the right side inside the box, and she struck again deep into stoppage time to seal the victory. Left with a 3-0 deficit, the young Bangladeshi squad had to accept elimination as the final whistle blew.
