Real Madrid Hold Firm to Beat Villarreal Despite Vinícius Red Card

Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday, despite being reduced to 10 men after Vinícius Júnior was sent off following a VAR review. The Brazilian forward had a goal disallowed before receiving a straight red card for pulling the hair of Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba. Real, however, held on to their narrow advantage to claim three valuable points.
The result at the Santiago Bernabéu offered relief to Real Madrid, who had to withstand sustained pressure after losing one of their attacking outlets. The victory also kept them within six points of league leaders Barcelona, although they remained third in the standings.
Real struggled to find their rhythm during the first half. Kylian Mbappé created several promising opportunities but failed to convert them into goals. One of his efforts struck the post, while Villarreal goalkeeper Peter Gulácsi produced a series of impressive saves to frustrate the hosts.
Despite their attacking intent, Real could not break the deadlock before the interval. Villarreal defended resolutely and looked capable of making the contest increasingly difficult for the home side.
The match changed after half-time, when Real found the breakthrough through Yan Diomande. Receiving the ball from Federico Valverde, the young Ivory Coast forward sent a low shot towards the far post and found the back of the net. It was his first goal for Real Madrid, giving the hosts a crucial lead in a closely contested encounter.
Real subsequently looked for a second goal to strengthen their position. Vinícius, introduced as a substitute, appeared to have provided it when he found the net. However, the celebrations were short-lived.
Following a VAR review, referee Isidro Díaz de Mera examined footage of an incident involving Vinícius and Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba. The review established that the Brazilian had pulled Saliba’s hair before scoring. The referee disallowed the goal and showed Vinícius a straight red card, leaving Real with 10 players for the remainder of the contest.
The dismissal forced Real to adjust their approach. With their numerical advantage, Villarreal pushed forward in search of an equaliser, placing the home side’s defence under considerable pressure. Real were compelled to concentrate on protecting their lead rather than pursuing another goal with the same attacking freedom.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois played a crucial role in preserving the advantage. He reacted sharply to deny an effort from Villarreal’s Carlos Romero, preventing the visitors from drawing level. His intervention proved particularly important as Villarreal sought to capitalise on their extra player.
Mbappé had another opportunity to extend Real’s lead late in the match, but he was unable to beat Gulácsi. Real therefore had to settle for a narrow victory, with Diomande’s second-half strike ultimately proving decisive.
The result lifted Real to third place in the La Liga standings, keeping them six points behind Barcelona. Although the three points strengthened their position, Vinícius’s dismissal became one of the match’s defining talking points. His absence could also present a challenge for the team’s attacking plans, depending on the disciplinary consequences of the incident.
Meanwhile, Barcelona continued their impressive start to the campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Getafe. The reigning champions have won all eight of their opening league matches, reinforcing their position at the top of the table and demonstrating remarkable consistency in the early stages of the season.
Atlético Madrid remained second after beating Alavés 2-1. The result left them five points behind Barcelona, keeping them in pursuit of the leaders as the competition for the title continued.
Barcelona’s perfect opening run has given them an early advantage, while Real Madrid’s victory over Villarreal ensured that they remained within reach of the leading teams. Nevertheless, the contrasting fortunes of the three clubs underline the importance of consistency in a demanding league campaign.
For Real, the immediate priority was to secure the victory despite the late pressure and the loss of Vinícius. Their ability to protect a slender lead with 10 men demonstrated defensive resilience, but the controversial sending-off added an unexpected complication to an otherwise successful evening at the Bernabéu.
