Portugal Suspends Cristiano Ronaldo Following Training Camp Departure
Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a temporary suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation following his abrupt departure from the national team training camp. The federation’s disciplinary council has initiated a formal investigation into the veteran forward’s conduct, and his ultimate punishment will depend on the final findings of the inquiry.
The Portuguese governing body released an official statement confirming the disciplinary action. According to the federation, the disciplinary council reviewed the gravity of the incident on 7 October before deciding to launch formal proceedings on 9 October. The case was subsequently handed over to an investigative committee on 10 October. Officials have stated that no further details will be disclosed to the public until the inquiry concludes.
The controversy originated in late September during the national team’s assembly in Copenhagen, Denmark. Tensions flared after head coach Jorge Jesus informed the squad that the captain would not feature in the starting line-up for the upcoming fixture against Denmark. This decision followed a frustrating previous match against Norway, where the star forward remained seated on the bench for the entire duration. Discontented with being left out of the tactical plans, an argument reportedly erupted between the player and the coaching staff, prompting Ronaldo to walk out of the camp entirely.
Under Article 160 of the Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary code, national team players who fail to participate in training sessions, matches, or official team duties without a valid justification face severe penalties. Regulations stipulate that offenders can be suspended from international competition for a period ranging from one to six months, alongside financial sanctions.
This unexpected development casts a shadow over the national side as they navigate crucial fixtures. The outcome of the ongoing investigation will determine when, or if, the iconic forward will return to wear the national jersey.
