Bangladesh’s journey at the Asian Games came to an end following a hard-fought goalless draw against Myanmar in their final Group F fixture in Japan. Despite manufacturing intermittent scoring opportunities throughout the contest, the red-and-green side failed to break the deadlock, ultimately finishing their campaign with a solitary point.
The encounter marked a renewed chapter in a developing rivalry. Just a year prior, Bangladesh secured a historic milestone by defeating Myanmar away from home to qualify for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time. However, reuniting on the pitch after eighteen months, neither side could find the decisive finishing touch. Both teams entered the final group match searching for redemption after difficult starts to the tournament. Bangladesh suffered heavy defeats in their opening two fixtures, conceding ten goals against North Korea and six against South Korea. Myanmar experienced similarly testing results, falling 5-0 to South Korea and 8-0 to North Korea.
From the opening whistle, Myanmar asserted pressure in the attacking third, frequently exploiting the flanks and channelling their offensive efforts through talismanic forward Win Theingi Tun. The defensive quartet, anchored by seasoned defenders Sheuli Azim and Shamsunnahar alongside goalkeeper Rupna Chakma, faced immense sustained pressure. In the 27th minute, Chakma produced a brilliant reflex save to tip away a dangerous strike that threatened to break the deadlock. Bangladesh attempted to construct counter-attacks through Ritu Porna Chakma, Monika Chakma, and Tohura Khatun, yet struggled to penetrate Myanmar’s defensive block.
The tactical pattern remained unchanged after the interval, with Myanmar maintaining territorial dominance. The defensive line continued to absorb waves of pressure as the match entered its tense closing stages. In the 68th minute, Moumita committed a foul that conceded a promising set-piece position, whilst a desperate defensive clearance in the 81st minute thwarted another clear-cut opportunity for the opposition. Captain Maria Manda marshalled the midfield and forced a corner kick in the 84th minute, though the resulting delivery yielded no reward.
As the match drifted into stoppage time, Myanmar intensified their search for a late winner. In the 91st minute, a sharp close-range effort from the Myanmar attack threatened to snatch victory, but Chakma stood firm once more to parry the ball away and preserve parity. Although Myanmar dominated the general flow of play and registered a higher volume of attempts, resolute defending and exceptional goalkeeping ensured Bangladesh held firm until the final whistle, drawing the curtain on their tournament participation.
