New Bangladesh national team head coach Thomas Dooley has declared his intent to end the country’s 23-year SAFF Championship silverware drought during the upcoming tournament hosted on home soil.
The ambitious campaign was formally launched at a grand unveiling ceremony in a Dhaka hotel, where tournament officials revealed the official logo alongside title sponsor Tecno, the global smartphone manufacturer. The premier South Asian football competition is scheduled to run in Bangladesh from 4 to 17 November.
High Stakes for New Leadership
The tournament marks the first major competitive test for Dooley since taking charge following the departure of former head coach Javier Cabrera. A decorated figure in international football, Dooley captained the United States at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and brings extensive experience as well as a disciplined tactical approach to the squad.
Speaking to reporters following the logo launch, the former defensive midfielder made his uncompromising, victory-focused mentality clear:
Thomas Dooley, Head Coach: “I want to win every match. It does not matter whether the opponent is Germany, Brazil, Argentina, or a team positioned near us in the FIFA rankings. Everything is possible. If we take this tournament seriously, there is a very good chance of bringing the trophy home. Winning the SAFF Championship is our dream, and I believe the time has come to make that dream a reality.”
Capitalising on Home Advantage
Bangladesh last won the SAFF Championship in 2003, a historic triumph that also took place on home ground. The current squad and technical staff view returning to familiar territory as a crucial asset in their quest for regional glory.
Young forward Sheikh Morsalin emphasised the necessity of maintaining tactical composure under pressure:

Veteran defender Tapu Barman reinforced the importance of home support, adding that he is prepared to assist the attack when needed:
Tapu Barman: “Playing in our own country means the fans will be in the stands, giving us extra energy. We have to prove that we are the best and deserving champions. The coach has reminded me that as a defender, my primary job is to stop goals. However, during difficult moments in a match, I will also try to score if needed to help the team win.”
