Bangladesh Midfielder Shamit Shome Linked with New York Cosmos
Whispers are growing louder across the football fraternity linking Bangladesh national team midfielder Shamit Shome to a high-profile move. The destination in question is the historic New York Cosmos, a club famously etched into football folklore in Bangladesh as the final professional playing stop for the legendary Brazilian icon Pelé. While neither the player nor the American club has officially confirmed the agreement, the prospect of a Bangladeshi international joining the storied outfit has generated considerable excitement.
Shome has been unattached since parting ways with Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC. His departure from the Canadian club was confirmed ahead of the 2026 season, marking the end of a solid three-season stint in the league. Prior to his commitment to international football roots, Shome made two senior international appearances for Canada in friendly fixtures. However, following the acquisition of his Bangladeshi citizenship last year, he committed his international future to the South Asian nation.
His transition to the Bangladesh national team unfolded smoothly. In June 2025, Shome made his competitive debut during the third round of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. Just four months later, during a thrilling qualifying encounter against Hong Kong, he netted his maiden international goal for Bangladesh in a narrow 4-3 defeat, cementing his status as an influential figure in the team’s midfield setup.
A potential move to the New York Cosmos would place Shome within a club steeped in remarkable heritage. During the 1970s, the North American Soccer League powerhouse attracted some of the sport’s greatest luminaries. Pelé famously graced the Cosmos lineup from 1975 to 1976, drawing global attention to American soccer. He was joined during that golden era by German defensive titan Franz Beckenbauer. Today, the club competes within the third tier of the United States football pyramid, and securing a talent of Shome’s international calibre would mark an intriguing new chapter for both the player and the historic franchise.
