Bangladeshi expatriate footballer Arham Islam has been called up to the Australia U-20 squad. Last year, he played for Bangladesh in age-group matches, but within a year, he has received an opportunity in a new national team.
In November, he made his debut in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup qualifiers in Cambodia. He did not receive further call-ups from Bangladesh, but his selection for Australia now begins a new chapter in his international career.
This month, Australia will tour Japan for a triangular series including Japan and Spain U-20 teams, as well as matches against club sides. Playing for Western United, this is a major challenge for Arham.
According to FIFA rules, a player may change nationality only once. Participation in this tournament will end his eligibility to play for Bangladesh, raising new discussions in international football.
