The club’s board is considering an event dedicated to one of the most influential players in Barcelona’s history, following Messi’s departure in 2021. Rather than marking a return as an active Barcelona player, the proposed occasion would be centred on recognising his extraordinary contribution to the club and giving supporters the opportunity to welcome him back to the stadium where he created many of his most memorable moments.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that the club wants to organise a special ceremony for Messi after the renovation of Camp Nou is completed. The plan has already been communicated to the Argentine, although the final decision will depend entirely on his approval.
According to comments reported by Spanish sports newspaper Sport, Barcelona are considering a farewell-style tribute in front of a packed Camp Nou. The renovated stadium is expected to have a capacity of around 105,000 spectators when fully operational, providing the setting for what the club hopes could be a significant occasion in its modern history.
Messi’s relationship with Barcelona goes far beyond his time on the pitch. He joined the club’s youth academy as a teenager and developed through the system before becoming one of the defining figures of the first team. During his long career in Barcelona colours, he won numerous major honours and established himself as the club’s record goalscorer.
His departure in 2021 came after Barcelona were unable to complete a new contract under La Liga’s financial regulations. Messi subsequently moved to Paris Saint-Germain before continuing his career in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami.
