Billionaires Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin Eye Liverpool Stake

Talks regarding the sale of a significant minority stake in English Premier League giants Liverpool have advanced considerably, drawing global attention to Merseyside. Fenway Sports Group, the American parent company that owns the historic football club, has engaged in high-level discussions with an influential investment consortium. According to prominent reports published by British media outlet The Times, negotiations have progressed smoothly over the past three months, paving the way for a potential milestone transaction in elite European football.
The high-powered consortium is spearheaded by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, who is notably the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Crucially, the syndicate includes tech luminaries Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. An insider close to the proceedings revealed to The Times that discussions remain ongoing while trending heavily towards a positive outcome. Broadcast network Sky News has further suggested that an official announcement regarding the transaction could emerge within the coming weeks, valuing the storied Anfield club at an estimated 4.5 billion pounds. Should the agreement materialise, it will introduce several of the world’s wealthiest private investors into the governance structure of English football.
Despite the monumental financial capital the incoming investors would command, Liverpool will not possess unrestricted spending power in the transfer market due to regulatory frameworks. The Premier League’s strict squad cost ratio regulations dictate that participating clubs must cap their football-related expenditure, including wages and amortised transfer fees, at a designated percentage of their overall revenue and net player trading results. Nevertheless, the injection of capital is expected to unlock lucrative commercial revenue streams and accelerate essential infrastructure and technological upgrades across the club’s facilities.
Consortium leader Bhatia recently stepped down from his long-standing position on the board of English Championship side Queens Park Rangers, handing over his shares to Ruben Gnanalingam after an association spanning nearly two decades. The immense financial backing behind the current bid is underscored by Forbes estimates, which place Jeff Bezos’s net worth well above 280 billion US dollars, while Eduardo Saverin commands a fortune exceeding 32 billion US dollars. Saverin is no stranger to English football investments, having previously participated in a similar consortium bid to acquire Chelsea Football Club in the wake of geopolitical disruptions in Ukraine.
Fenway Sports Group originally acquired Liverpool in October 2010 for a modest 300 million pounds from previous American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. Under FSG’s stewardship, the twenty-time league champions have enjoyed a golden era, securing multiple Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles while modernising Anfield through stadium expansions and constructing a state-of-the-art training ground in Kirkby.
While market analysts have questioned whether this prospective transaction signals a gradual exit strategy for FSG, media reports indicate that the short-term objective is to bolster the club’s balance sheet and commercial muscle. This mirrors strategic financial maneuvers such as the 2023 agreement where minority shares were sold to Dynasty Equity. At that time, FSG president and Liverpool’s day-to-day operations chief Mike Gordon reaffirmed that the ownership group’s long-term commitment to the club remains absolute. Representatives from Fenway Sports Group have been approached by media outlets for further commentary as discussions continue behind closed doors.
