Mourinho Imposes Strict Discipline in His Real Madrid Return
Real Madrid endured a turbulent campaign last season, generating more headlines for off-pitch controversies than on-field achievements. The mounting distractions heavily impacted their performances, leading to a rare trophy-less finish. Recognising the urgent need for a reset, the club leadership opted for a dugout shake-up, bringing back Jose Mourinho for a second spell at the Santiago Bernabeu thirteen years after his initial departure.
The Portuguese tactician is wasting no time establishing absolute control over a dressing room that has recently suffered from internal friction and a clash of egos. Following brief managerial stints by Xabi Alonso and interim coach Alvaro Arbeloa, club president Florentino Perez has turned once again to Mourinho to steady the ship. During his first tenure between 2011 and 2012, Mourinho famously guided Los Blancos to a record-breaking La Liga title, though his exit back then was marred by high-profile player disputes.
Already hard at work at the Valdebebas training ground during pre-season preparations, the manager has overhauled daily routines to tighten his grip on the squad. According to reports from the Spanish sports daily AS, the new directives target diet, injury rehabilitation, and punctuality with zero tolerance for complacency.
Dietary freedom has been completely revoked. Footballers no longer have the luxury of choosing their own meals, as club nutritionists now dictate strict breakfast and afternoon menus tailored precisely to maximise physical performance and athletic conditioning. While players previously enjoyed more leeway in this area, the squad has reportedly accepted the adjustment without resistance.
Punctuality has also faced a severe crackdown. Previously, arriving late to training incurred a standard financial penalty. Under the new regime, any player who turns up late is barred from taking part in the main session, forced instead to undergo solitary physical conditioning in the gymnasium. Furthermore, everyone must report to Valdebebas at least one hour before any scheduled team meeting or training session.
Medical protocols have seen equally stringent measures. Independent treatment outside the club’s facilities has been prohibited, meaning any injury recovery and rehabilitation programme must be overseen exclusively by club medical staff.
Despite the rigid framework, sources close to the club indicate that the squad has responded positively to Mourinho’s authoritative approach, viewing it as a genuine effort to restore team unity. An internal source quoted by AS noted that the current atmosphere within the club is remarkably healthy and positive. Even so, observers remain watchful, wondering how long the star-studded squad will maintain harmony under the demanding coach’s iron fist.
