Brazil Confidence in World Cup Declines

Brazil’s long-standing status as a global football powerhouse has been accompanied by growing public scepticism regarding its prospects at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Since last winning the tournament in 2002, the five-time world champions have been unable to reclaim the title, and recent survey findings indicate that optimism among Brazilian supporters has significantly diminished.

According to the survey, 54 per cent of Brazilian respondents expressed no interest in the World Cup, while only 12 per cent described themselves as “excited” about the tournament. In addition, 68 per cent of those surveyed believe that Brazil’s chances of winning the 2026 World Cup remain slim. The study, which began in April 2023, has recently released its final results, highlighting what is described as the most pessimistic outlook recorded in such a survey regarding Brazilian attitudes towards the tournament.

The findings reflect a broader sense of disappointment linked to Brazil’s recent performances on the international stage. In the most recent World Cup qualifying campaign, Brazil finished fifth, securing their place in the finals but without dominant form. During the qualifiers, they suffered two defeats against Argentina and also recorded a loss against Japan. These results have contributed to growing concerns over the team’s consistency and competitive strength.

Public opinion regarding squad selection for the upcoming tournament also appears divided, particularly concerning the future of Neymar. The long-standing uncertainty over whether he will feature in the 2026 World Cup squad is expected to be resolved on 18 May, when head coach Carlo Ancelotti announces Brazil’s final selection.

The survey further reveals a split in public sentiment over Neymar’s inclusion. Forty-seven per cent of respondents stated that they do not want him in the national squad, while 45 per cent opposed his return. The remaining 8 per cent did not express a definitive opinion.

A summary of the survey findings is presented below:
