The Qatar national football team secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup point after holding a dominant Swiss side to a 1–1 draw. Despite Switzerland controlling the fixture and registering 26 shots, their inability to convert multiple goal-scoring opportunities allowed Qatar to claim a historic result in what is only their second appearance at a World Cup tournament.
The match, held in California, commenced with both teams creating scoring opportunities within the opening 10 minutes, though neither side managed to convert. The deadlock was broken following an incident in the 13th minute. A header from Swiss forward Breel Embolo sent the ball into the penalty area, prompting Remo Freuler to chase possession. Although Freuler reached the ball first, Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada committed a foul against him inside the box, leading the referee to award an immediate penalty.

In the 17th minute, Breel Embolo successfully converted the penalty kick to give Switzerland a 1–0 lead, marking the first penalty goal scored in this edition of the World Cup. The Swiss team continued to dictate the tempo after the half-time interval. Throughout the match, Switzerland registered a total of 26 shots, seven of which were on target. However, Qatar’s defensive unit repeatedly frustrated the Swiss attackers, executing numerous clearances and saves. Whilst restricted to a total of seven shots throughout the match, Qatar systematically relied on counter-attacks to challenge the Swiss defence.
Injury-Time Equaliser and Group Standings
Qatar’s defensive resilience was rewarded during injury time. In the 94th minute of play, a precise cross delivered from the left flank found Qatari captain Boualem Khoukhi, who converted the opportunity with a header to equalise at 1–1.
This result marks a significant statistical improvement for Qatar compared to their debut tournament. During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which Qatar hosted, the team lost all three of their group stage matches and conceded seven goals, recording the statistically worst performance by a host nation in World Cup history.
With this draw, Qatar earned their first point in Group B. In the opening match of the group, co-hosts Canada drew 1–1 against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Consequently, all four teams in Group B are currently level on points and goal difference.
