To mark his 39th birthday, the small Patagonian town of Cutral Co has unveiled a staggering 85-foot monument. This mammoth structure now stands as the largest physical tribute dedicated to the Argentine captain anywhere in the world.

This grand unveiling coincides perfectly with a historic chapter in Messi’s glittering career. Just moments before his birthday celebrations commenced, the veteran forward rewrote the history books on the World Cup stage. By securing a spectacular brace against Austria, he officially claimed the title of the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer. His 17th and 18th World Cup goals saw him eclipse the long-standing record held by German football legend Miroslav Klose, cementing his legacy as arguably the greatest player the sport has ever seen.

The monument captures the exact second Messi dropped to his knees on the grass of the Lusail Stadium after defeating France to secure the world title. Alongside this touching scene, the design incorporates his trademark celebration—holding the Argentine jersey in one hand whilst pointing a single index finger towards the sky with the other. This familiar gesture remains a deeply personal tribute to his late grandmother, who first encouraged his childhood footballing dreams.

Global fascination with the forward has sparked similar projects internationally, though not all have shared the same success. A recently constructed 70-foot statue in Kolkata, India, garnered significant media attention ahead of his rumoured visit to the region. Local authorities, however, were forced to order its immediate removal due to severe safety concerns. Strong winds caused the immense structure to sway precariously, raising fears of an imminent collapse in the densely populated centre.

Back in his home country, the outpouring of affection extends well beyond steel monuments. On the outskirts of Buenos Aires, a vibrant new mural has transformed the urban landscape. Over 1,300 devoted fans directly participated in the artwork by painting their own names into the piece. Measuring 20 feet in width and 18 feet in height, the collaborative public project took artist Lionel Garcia 18 days to finish.
