Diallo Strikes Late to Sink Ecuador

Ivory Coast secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their opening match of the World Cup in Philadelphia, courtesy of a dramatic late strike from substitute Amad Diallo.

The South American side were left deeply frustrated after striking the woodwork on three separate occasions throughout the encounter. Ivory Coast were also denied by the frame of the goal once in a match of fine margins, before the Manchester United forward finally broke the deadlock in the 90th minute with a precise finish from the edge of the penalty area.

Ecuador Regret Missed First-Half Opportunities

Ecuador enjoyed the better of the goalscoring opportunities during the opening 45 minutes. Following a defensive error by Emmanuel Agbadu, Enner Valencia found himself with space inside the penalty box, but the experienced forward fired his effort over the crossbar.

John Yeboah came even closer to breaking the deadlock when his curling shot from the edge of the box rattled the woodwork. Ecuador’s misfortune continued when Alan Minda received a through-ball from Pedro Vite, only to see his subsequent strike bounce back off the post.

For Ivory Coast, 19-year-old Ousmane Diomande put in a highly impressive performance on the right flank, though his progressive attacking plays initially failed to yield results for his team. Nicolas Pépé hesitated too long when presented with a promising opening, and another of his attempts was inadvertently blocked by his own teammate, Elye Wahi.

Intense Second-Half Exchanges and the Decisive Blow

Ecuador threatened again early in the second half when Valencia linked up beautifully with Gonzalo Plata via a swift one-two passing combination, but the captain’s final shot clipped the outside of the post. Despite this scare, Ivory Coast began to assert greater control and create more dangerous opportunities after the interval.

The lively Diomande advanced into the penalty box twice, but sent both of his attempts over and wide of the target. Shortly after, Wahi met a well-placed cross from Diomande, only to see his effort cannon back off the crossbar.

At the opposite end of the pitch, Ivorian goalkeeper Yahia Fofana produced a fine save to deny a long-range effort from Plata, before Joel Ordóñez headed a free-kick narrowly over the bar.

The definitive moment arrived in the 90th minute. Wilfried Singo made a powerful run down the flank before delivering a precise cross. The ball found Diallo at the edge of the penalty box, and the substitute expertly directed his shot into the inside of the post to seal all three points for the African nation.
