Egypt Lodge Official Match-Fixing Complaint with FIFA Over Refereeing

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has launched a formal complaint with FIFA, alleging match-fixing during their dramatic 3-2 defeat against defending champions Argentina. Egypt had maintained a commanding 2-0 lead until the 78th minute of the match before Argentina staged a remarkable late comeback to secure their place in the quarter-finals. However, the fallout from the fixture has been dominated by fierce controversy surrounding the officiating.

Hany Abo Rida, the President of the EFA, submitted a written protest to football’s global governing body targeting the performance of French referee François Letexier and his officiating team. The Egyptian federation claims that a series of critical decisions systematically undermined their team, ultimately orchestrating their exit from the tournament. Specifically, the complaint highlights a disallowed Egyptian goal and a denied penalty claim that Egypt believes were wrongfully adjudicated.

The outrage was echoed by the squad immediately following the final whistle. Egyptian midfielder Mostafa Ziko, who scored the disallowed goal, openly questioned the impartiality of the referee. Meanwhile, Egypt’s head coach, Hossam Hassan, levelled severe allegations against the organisers, asserting that the match was manipulated because FIFA prioritised keeping Argentina and Lionel Messi in the tournament for commercial and broadcasting interests.

In its official submission, the EFA has demanded a thorough investigation into what it terms “highly controversial decisions” directed against the Pharaohs. Furthermore, the federation has requested that Letexier and his assistants be removed from officiating any subsequent matches in the tournament.

This burgeoning scandal unfolds amidst broader anxiety regarding the standard of officiating in contemporary international football. Recently, both the Belgian Football Association and UEFA have voiced significant reservations about VAR and refereeing consistency. Analysts suggest that the overall quality of match governance is becoming a systemic issue, with the Egypt-Argentina fixture serving as the latest flashpoint in an ongoing debate over sporting integrity.
