Final Whistle for Mamunul Islam: Bangladesh’s Midfield General Retires

Mamunul Islam, the distinguished former captain of the Bangladesh national football team, has formally announced his retirement from professional competition, bringing a momentous career of over two decades to a close. The 37-year-old veteran midfielder is scheduled to make his final professional appearance on Friday, 1 May 2026. Representing Fortis FC, he will face Rahmatganj MFS in a Bangladesh Premier League fixture at the Bashundhara Kings Arena.

During a poignant press conference held at the Fortis FC clubhouse on Thursday, 30 April 2026, Mamunul provided a retrospective on his substantial tenure. Whilst expressing deep gratitude for the prestige, silverware, and financial security the sport has afforded him, he candidly discussed two primary professional regrets that accompany his departure from the pitch.

A Legacy of Silverware and National Leadership

Mamunul’s professional journey began in 2005 with Brothers Union. Renowned for his tactical intelligence and precise distribution, he quickly became a cornerstone of the domestic league. He earned his international debut for the senior national team in 2008 and was later entrusted with the captaincy from 2013 to 2016. Throughout his international tenure, he earned 67 caps for the “Red and Green” and recorded three goals.

His career is punctuated by several landmark achievements:

  • 2010 South Asian Games: He was a pivotal figure in the Under-23 squad that secured a Gold Medal on home soil, a feat that remains a high point in the nation’s sporting history.

  • Domestic Honours: Across a career playing for 11 different clubs, his most prolific spell occurred at Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, where he secured three Premier League titles and two Federation Cups.

  • Pioneering Regional Move: In 2014, Mamunul became the first Bangladeshi footballer to sign for an Indian Super League (ISL) franchise, joining Atlético de Kolkata (ATK).

Lingering Disappointments and the ISL Tenure

Despite being part of the ATK squad that claimed the inaugural ISL championship, Mamunul’s time in Kolkata remains a source of personal frustration. During his farewell address, he identified his lack of match participation during that historic season as a significant regret.

“I have gained so much from football—reputation, wealth, and trophies. It is now time for me to repay that debt,” Mamunul stated. “However, failing to secure a SAFF Championship title for my country remains a profound regret. Additionally, being part of a championship-winning team at ATK but receiving no playing time is a disappointment that will stay with me for as long as I live.”

The inability to deliver the SAFF (South Asian Football Federation) trophy to the senior national team is a sentiment shared by many of his contemporaries, as Bangladesh has struggled to reclaim the regional title last won in 2003.

Transitioning to Technical Leadership

Whilst his time as a player is concluding, Mamunul has no intention of distancing himself from the sport. He has proactively prepared for a transition into coaching, having already secured an AFC ‘A’ Coaching License. This qualification permits him to lead professional teams, ensuring his tactical expertise remains a benefit to the Bangladeshi football infrastructure.

“Living without football would be exceptionally difficult for me,” he remarked. “Sport is our life; football, specifically, is my everything.”

An Era Concludes at the Kings Arena

Mamunul’s retirement marks the end of a defining era for the sport in Bangladesh. For many supporters, he represented the tactical heartbeat of the national team during a period of significant transition. His final match on Friday at the Kings Arena serves as a symbolic passing of the torch to the emerging talent within Fortis FC.

As the final whistle approaches, the footballing fraternity recognises Mamunul Islam not merely for his technical elegance, but for his unwavering dedication to the domestic game and his role as a pioneering ambassador for Bangladeshi football on the regional stage
