Following in the footsteps of Jamal Bhuiyan and Hamza Chowdhury, who have brought acclaim to Bangladesh’s national men’s football team as overseas-based players, a new chapter may soon unfold in women’s football. For the first time, a Bangladesh-born abroad footballer could represent the national women’s team.

Anika Rania Siddiqui, a 20-year-old midfielder born in Sweden, has arrived in Dhaka to take part in the trials for the Bangladesh national women’s football team. If she impresses head coach Peter Butler during the selection process, she could earn the opportunity to play at the international level for Bangladesh.

Anika began her football journey as a central midfielder but is also adept at playing on the wings. Demonstrating remarkable determination, she travelled to Dhaka at her own initiative and expense to pursue her dream of representing the country. Holding a Bangladeshi passport, she meets the eligibility criteria to play in international competitions for Bangladesh.

The national team’s 10-day training camp, beginning on 28 January, provides a platform for Anika to showcase her skills, tactical awareness, and versatility. Coaches will closely monitor her performance, evaluating not only technical abilities but also her adaptability to the style and pace of South Asian football.

If successful, Anika would become a pioneering example of the growing influence of diaspora players in Bangladesh women’s football, reflecting a broader trend already evident in the men’s game, where overseas talent has strengthened the national squad.
