Chelsea edged past arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur with a hard-fought 1–0 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening, thanks to a crucial strike from Joao Pedro that finally ended his prolonged goal drought.

Pedro’s Relief as Blues Clinch London Derby

The Brazilian forward struck decisively late in the first half, firing home from close range after Raheem Sterling’s low cross caused chaos in the Spurs penalty area. It proved to be the only goal of a tightly contested London derby, earning Chelsea a valuable three points and extending their unbeaten run under head coach Enzo Maresca.

For Pedro, the goal carried personal significance — it was his first in nine appearances across all competitions, with his last effort coming on 30 August against Fulham. Since joining from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer for a reported £60 million, the 24-year-old has faced mounting pressure to justify his hefty price tag. His composed finish in this fixture may well mark a turning point in his early Chelsea career.

Maresca’s Tactical Discipline Pays Off

Enzo Maresca’s tactical plan was evident from the outset. Chelsea set up with compact defensive organisation, restricting Tottenham’s space in midfield and looking to hit on the counter. Despite Spurs dominating possession in spells, they struggled to break down a resolute back line marshalled by Thiago Silva and Levi Colwill.

In midfield, Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández worked tirelessly to disrupt Tottenham’s rhythm, while Cole Palmer provided moments of flair and control in the attacking third. The Blues’ discipline and work rate were a testament to Maresca’s growing influence on the squad.

Spurs Left Frustrated

Tottenham, meanwhile, will rue a series of missed opportunities. Son Heung-min and James Maddison both came close, but neither could find a way past an inspired Robert Sánchez in the Chelsea goal. Ange Postecoglou’s men pressed intensely throughout the second half, yet lacked the cutting edge to salvage a result.

The defeat marks Spurs’ second loss in three league matches and highlights their ongoing inconsistency in front of goal. Despite their attacking intent, the hosts were ultimately undone by Chelsea’s composure and defensive solidity.

A Vital Win for Chelsea

For Chelsea, the result represents another step forward in their gradual resurgence under Maresca. The Blues have now recorded back-to-back league wins, climbing further up the table and showing encouraging signs of cohesion after an uneven start to the season.

Joao Pedro’s long-awaited goal could not have come at a better time — both for his confidence and for Chelsea’s momentum as they prepare for upcoming fixtures against Aston Villa and West Ham.
