Kirkwood Claims Nashville Pole

Kyle Kirkwood produced a superb qualifying performance to secure pole position for the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway, edging defending race winner Josef Newgarden in a thrilling battle for the top spot while championship leader Alex Palou settled for fourth.

The Andretti Global driver delivered a blistering two-lap average of 196.852mph in the No. 27 Honda, claiming his first pole position of the 2026 IndyCar Series season and his second career Nashville Superspeedway pole. It was another timely statement from the Floridian, who arrives at one of his strongest circuits looking to reduce the deficit to championship leader Palou with the title fight entering its decisive phase.

Kirkwood’s lap narrowly denied Newgarden, whose 196.642mph average placed the Team Penske driver alongside him on the front row. Scott McLaughlin completed an impressive Penske showing in third, while Palou ensured Chip Ganassi Racing remained firmly in contention from fourth.

For Kirkwood, however, the achievement was as much a reflection of the team behind him as it was of his own commitment over two flat-out laps around the demanding 1.33-mile concrete oval.

“Quite honestly, it’s the car that Andretti gives me here,” Kirkwood said. “We were quick in practice. We’ve been good here the past couple of years. I mean, you do the same as everybody else is doing: hold it flat and hope your car goes fast. They build really good cars around me. We did everything right, managed the tools a little bit and got aggressive with some trim. It worked out well.”

Dramatic qualifying session

The qualifying order produced several changes throughout the afternoon before the championship contenders took to the circuit.

Ed Carpenter Racing initially controlled proceedings. Christian Rasmussen set the benchmark with a 195.585mph average before team-mate Alexander Rossi raised the standard with 195.664mph, giving the Chevrolet squad provisional pole midway through the session.

Santino Ferrucci briefly climbed to second for A.J. Foyt Racing, while Meyer Shank Racing’s Marcus Armstrong and Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Rinus VeeKay also featured near the top of the leaderboard.

Six-time series champion Scott Dixon then became the first driver to eclipse Rossi, only for Scott McLaughlin to immediately improve upon his fellow New Zealander’s effort with a 196.087mph average.

That benchmark lasted only moments before Newgarden delivered what appeared to be a pole-winning run, recording 196.642mph.

Yet Kirkwood, the penultimate driver to qualify, found even more speed. His outstanding lap displaced Newgarden by just over two-tenths of a mile per hour, leaving only Palou with the opportunity to respond. Despite another strong effort from the four-time reigning champion, the Spaniard’s 196.050mph average proved enough only for fourth.

Malukas ruled out of qualifying

One of the day’s biggest stories came before qualifying had even begun.

Team Penske’s David Malukas was unable to participate following his heavy accident during Saturday morning practice. The 24-year-old struck the outside wall in Turn 2 after losing control of his No. 12 Chevrolet, suffering severe bruising to his knee that required precautionary hospital evaluation.

Although medical examinations cleared Malukas of any fractures or ligament damage, Penske elected not to rush him back into qualifying while the team prepared a back-up car. As a result, he will start from the rear of the field.

The team’s immediate priority shifted from chasing pole position to ensuring both driver and replacement chassis would be ready for race day.

Mechanical frustration for Rahal

Qualifying frustration also struck Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Graham Rahal failed to record a lap after his No. 15 Honda repeatedly stalled in pit lane. Reporting “fuel pressure at zero” over team radio, Rahal was unable to leave the pit lane within IndyCar’s mandatory time limit and was subsequently towed back to the garage without completing a qualifying attempt.

Elsewhere, Christian Lundgaard endured another difficult oval qualifying session, finishing 19th after managing just 194.086mph, while Arrow McLaren team-mate Pato O’Ward qualified 12th.

Despite those setbacks, the championship protagonists remain well placed heading into race day, with Kirkwood, Newgarden, McLaughlin and Palou occupying the first two rows.

Top contenders well positioned

With only a handful of races remaining in the 2026 championship, every point has become increasingly valuable.

Kirkwood’s pole position gives the Andretti driver an ideal opportunity to continue applying pressure to Palou in the standings, while Newgarden and McLaughlin will also fancy their chances of victory on a circuit where Team Penske has traditionally excelled.

Meanwhile, Palou’s fourth-place starting position keeps him firmly in the hunt, and Dixon’s fifth-place qualifying effort means Chip Ganassi Racing will have two genuine contenders near the front when the green flag falls.

With the front row occupied by Kirkwood and Newgarden, the stage is set for another fiercely contested oval race in Nashville. Whether Kirkwood can convert pole into victory—and further tighten the championship battle—will be one of the defining storylines as the 2026 IndyCar season moves into its closing stretch.
