Lampard Linked With Chelsea Return

Speculation surrounding a possible return of Frank Lampard to Chelsea has resurfaced following managerial changes at Stamford Bridge, though the former England midfielder has reiterated his focus remains solely on Coventry City.

Lampard has already managed Chelsea twice, but neither spell produced sustained success. Despite his deep association with the club as a former player, he has adopted a cautious and professional stance following the departure of Liam Rosenior from the managerial post at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have endured a difficult Premier League campaign. The club have failed to score in their last five consecutive matches and currently sit eighth in the table. The season began under Enzo Maresca, who was dismissed in January. Liam Rosenior subsequently took charge, but he too was relieved of his duties on 22 April after recording 11 wins, 2 draws and 10 defeats in 23 matches.

Chelsea are now searching for a new head coach, with Lampard’s name emerging in media discussion. However, the 47-year-old has declined to engage with such speculation, instead concentrating on his current role at Coventry City.

Lampard took charge of Coventry in November 2024 and has since overseen a significant transformation. In 80 matches, he has recorded 44 victories, guiding the club to the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League. Coventry are now preparing for their final league fixture against Wrexham, after which they will celebrate their title success.

Ahead of Coventry’s final match at the CBS Arena, Lampard has emphasised his commitment to the club. Speaking at a press conference, he refused to comment on Chelsea’s managerial situation or the departure of Rosenior, stating:

“Liam or Chelsea, I have no comment to make on that. I have been in dugouts myself so I think it is disrespectful to judge situations without knowing what is going on behind the scenes. I will leave that to pundits. I am the Coventry City manager, and I am enjoying winning the Championship and getting promoted to the Premier League.”

He also acknowledged Chelsea’s current difficulties without offering further comment on his own potential involvement, saying:

“They are going through a difficult period. As managers, we know what that can mean in terms of results. Chelsea is a big part of my life, but that is their situation. My focus is entirely on Coventry.”

Lampard remains under contract with Coventry until June 2027, yet speculation about his future continues. Coventry supporters have expressed concern about his long-term stay, given his strong historical ties to Chelsea.

Addressing such concerns, Lampard said:

“In management, there are many things outside your control. I would encourage Coventry supporters to enjoy this special year. There has been no discussion about my future. I am simply focused on doing my job.”
