Legendary Fan’s Legacy Lives On Forever

For decades, Dhaka’s football stadiums resonated with unbridled passion, and at the heart of that fervour was Ataur Rahman, affectionately known as “Ata Bhai.” A lifelong supporter of Mohammedan Sporting Club, Ata Bhai was a familiar sight at both the National Stadium and Mirpur Stadium, waving the club’s black-and-white flag and cheering with unmatched enthusiasm. That roar, which once filled the stadium with life, will now fall silent.

Ataur Rahman passed away last night at his residence in Tejgaon, Dhaka, aged over 80, after a prolonged illness associated with old age. His death marks the end of an era for Mohammedan fans, who remember him as the embodiment of selfless devotion to football.

Ataur first set foot in the National Stadium in 1962 as a young boy. From that moment, Mohammedan became the sole rhythm of his heartbeat. In an age dominated by social media fandom and digital allegiance, Ata Bhai’s pure, unwavering loyalty was something extraordinary, almost unimaginable today.

From the 1960s until 2017, Ataur scarcely missed a Mohammedan match in Dhaka. Despite suffering from numerous health issues in later years, he never allowed his physical limitations to dampen his spirit. He attended matches even when frail, drawing sustenance from the dust of the pitch and the roar of goals. His rivalry with Abahani Sporting Club was legendary; even off the field, he seemed to act as a vigilant guardian of the black-and-white stripes, living and breathing every victory and defeat.

Ata Bhai was more than just a fan of Mohammedan—he was a devotee of football itself. Former Director-in-Charge of Mohammedan Sporting Club, Lokman Hossain Bhuiya, paid tribute to him at Tejgaon Jame Masjid today, alongside several club officials. Ataur’s coffin was draped with the club’s flag, a final testament to his lifelong allegiance.
