Christian Lundgaard accepted full responsibility after seeing a commanding drive at Mid-Ohio unravel, admitting a crucial mid-race mistake allowed Arrow McLaren team-mate Pato O’Ward to snatch victory and deny him what would have been his second win of the 2026 IndyCar Series season.
Although disappointed, the Danish driver took consolation from helping Arrow McLaren secure a landmark one-two finish in the Honda Indy 200, the team’s first clean sweep of the top two positions in IndyCar competition.
Starting from pole position, Lundgaard appeared in complete control during the opening half of the 90-lap contest at the 2.258-mile, 13-turn Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Driving the No. 7 Chevrolet, he led 41 laps while steadily managing the pace under punishing summer temperatures.
However, the complexion of the race changed on lap 42.
As tyre wear increased and fuel loads decreased, Lundgaard’s car developed an increasingly unstable rear end. A small mistake entering Turn 2 proved costly, allowing O’Ward to close rapidly before launching a decisive move into Turn 5.
Rather than aggressively defending the position, Lundgaard elected to race his team-mate fairly, despite acknowledging afterwards that he could have made life considerably more difficult.
“At the end of the day it was a mistake of my own,” Lundgaard admitted.
“I was struggling so much on entries with the rear. It happened three times before that lap. Then obviously I wanted to be the good sport. I could just easily have run him off the track in Turn 4 if I wanted to. I didn’t. We fought. We touched. I think that’s always good racing.”
The pair briefly made light contact as they battled for the lead, but both drivers emerged unscathed before O’Ward edged clear and controlled the remainder of the race to claim his first victory of the season.
Car balance became increasingly difficult
Mid-Ohio’s race ran caution-free, placing enormous physical and technical demands on both drivers and machinery.
Without interruptions to cool tyres or make setup adjustments, drivers had to manage rapidly evolving track conditions throughout the afternoon. Lundgaard explained that Arrow McLaren had expected the balance of the car to migrate towards understeer during the race.
Instead, the opposite occurred.
The rear of the car became progressively looser, making braking zones and corner entry increasingly unpredictable.
“We expected it to go towards understeer,” Lundgaard explained after the race.
Instead, the setup evolved into something far more difficult to manage, forcing him to fight the car through virtually every braking zone during the second stint.
Despite those challenges, Lundgaard felt the team extracted the maximum possible result after surrendering the lead.
“Very, very difficult, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how difficult the car is to drive.
“I still think we sort of maximised today, which is always nice.”
Historic day for Arrow McLaren
While Lundgaard was understandably disappointed to miss out on victory, the result represented another significant milestone for Arrow McLaren.
The one-two finish underlined the team’s growing competitiveness across every circuit type in 2026 and demonstrated the strength of its driver line-up.
For O’Ward, the victory ended a lengthy wait for his first triumph of the campaign, while Lundgaard collected his second runner-up finish of the season and his fifth podium overall.
It also continued an impressive championship campaign that has firmly established the Dane as one of Alex Palou’s principal title challengers entering the final seven rounds.

Although victory slipped away, Lundgaard still left Mid-Ohio with a substantial points haul at a critical stage of the season.

The Mid-Ohio result strengthened Arrow McLaren’s momentum heading into the Nashville oval while keeping Lundgaard firmly in contention against reigning four-time champion Alex Palou.
His honest assessment of the race reflected both frustration and perspective. The mistake that cost victory was entirely self-inflicted, but rather than risking contact with his team-mate in an attempt to reclaim the lead, Lundgaard prioritised clean racing and the team’s overall result.
In the end, it was a costly error in terms of the race victory, yet one that still delivered an important podium, valuable championship points and a historic afternoon for Arrow McLaren as the team celebrated its maiden IndyCar one-two finish.
