David Malukas has been declared fit to compete in the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix after a frightening accident during opening practice at Nashville Superspeedway resulted in a precautionary trip to hospital.
The Team Penske driver suffered a heavy impact with the outside wall during the first practice session on Saturday morning, but medical examinations confirmed he escaped without any fractures or ligament damage. Although severe bruising to his knee ruled him out of qualifying, the 24-year-old returned later in the day to participate in the evening’s high-line session and final practice, providing a major boost to his championship hopes.
The incident unfolded around 20 minutes into the opening session on the 1.33-mile concrete oval. Malukas lost control of his No. 12 Team Penske Chevrolet through Turn 2 before the car rotated and struck the outside SAFER Barrier backwards with significant force.
The impact was substantial enough for Malukas’ right knee to smash into the steering wheel, generating enough force to detach it from the steering column. The collision also caused considerable damage to the protective barrier, prompting an extended red-flag period while circuit workers repaired the wall.
Track crews spent more than 20 minutes replacing sections of the damaged SAFER Barrier before IndyCar officials extended the session by an additional 10 minutes to compensate for the interruption.
Although Malukas climbed from the cockpit under his own power with assistance from the AMR Safety Team, IndyCar’s medical staff elected to send him to a nearby hospital for precautionary scans and further evaluation.
Fortunately for both driver and team, the results delivered positive news.
Hospital checks reveal only bruising
Medical examinations showed no broken bones or torn ligaments, with the only injury diagnosed as significant bruising to Malukas’ knee.
The Chicago-born driver praised the rapid response from IndyCar’s medical personnel, the AMR Safety Team and hospital staff, all of whom worked against the clock to ensure he could potentially return before the day’s on-track programme concluded.
“Everything is good,” Malukas said after being cleared to return.
“I want to take this moment to say a big thank you to the AMR Safety Team and everybody involved from IndyCar and the hospital I went to. So much was going on. I can’t remember the name of the hospital, but shout out to Sam over there. Everybody was just so on it, making sure that we could get these results because everybody knew we were on a time constraint.
“Thankfully, everything came back clean. Nothing’s broken, nothing’s torn, which was pretty impressive because I literally took the wheel off with my knee. I couldn’t believe that.
“So it’s just badly bruised, but we’ve got some good people around me who worked on it a little bit.
“So we’re good to go.”
His return later on Saturday was a significant morale boost for Team Penske, particularly after the squad immediately switched its focus to preparing a back-up chassis following the extensive damage sustained by his primary car.
Setback on the grid
Despite receiving medical clearance, the crash inevitably carries competitive consequences.
Because the accident prevented Malukas from taking part in qualifying, he will line up from the rear of the field in a replacement car for Sunday’s race. Under IndyCar regulations, drivers transferring to a back-up chassis after practice are required to start from the back regardless of pace shown later in the weekend.
Even so, completing the final practice sessions allowed Malukas to regain confidence and provide valuable feedback on race balance before the green flag.
Given Nashville’s reputation for frequent caution periods, strategic variation and tyre degradation, starting last does not necessarily eliminate the possibility of a strong recovery drive. Previous races at the superspeedway have demonstrated that pit strategy, well-timed cautions and consistent long-run pace can transform fortunes over the course of the event.
Championship implications
Malukas has enjoyed one of the strongest seasons of his IndyCar career and remains firmly in championship contention. Missing the race altogether would have dealt a severe blow to those ambitions, making his medical clearance especially significant.
While beginning from the back presents a difficult challenge, simply taking the start preserves the opportunity to score valuable championship points during the closing stages of the season.
