The possibility of seeing Barcelona’s iconic attacking trio together again has sparked fresh excitement, with speculation that Neymar could join Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Inter Miami. The Brazilian forward’s future remains uncertain, however, and former Major League Soccer goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has questioned whether bringing the three stars together would necessarily prove a sound investment for the league.
Neymar’s current contract with Santos is due to expire at the end of this year, leaving his next destination open. The 34-year-old forward has endured a difficult period in his career, with repeated injuries affecting his consistency and limiting his ability to reproduce the form that once made him one of the most feared attackers in world football.
His career reached a landmark in 2017 when Paris Saint-Germain signed him from Barcelona for a world-record €222 million. At the time, Neymar was regarded as one of the defining stars of his generation, combining creativity, pace, dribbling and an exceptional ability to score and create goals.
His subsequent years, however, have been repeatedly interrupted by injuries. That history has become a key part of the discussion surrounding his future. Any move to another club would have to take into account not only his commercial appeal but also his ability to remain fit and contribute consistently on the pitch.
Inter Miami already provides the setting for a potential reunion. Messi has a contract with the American club until 2028 and has been reunited there with Suarez, his former Barcelona team-mate. The pair formed a formidable partnership during their time in Spain and remain among the most recognisable names associated with the club.
Neymar joining them would complete the reunion of the trio that became known as ‘MSN’ during their Barcelona years. Messi, Suarez and Neymar were central figures in one of the most celebrated attacking combinations of the modern era, with their technical quality and understanding making them a major force in European football.
A reunion in Miami would therefore carry enormous appeal for supporters. It could also strengthen Inter Miami’s global profile, particularly among fans who followed the trio during their Barcelona days. The presence of three players with such a strong shared history could generate significant interest around matches, merchandise and the club’s international brand.
Hislop, however, believes the sporting and financial realities need to be considered carefully. In his view, both Neymar and Suarez are now approaching the final stages of their careers. Neymar’s injury record has affected his consistency, while Suarez, at 39, can no longer be expected to possess the same pace and physical attributes that characterised his earlier years.
The former MLS goalkeeper accepts that the prospect of seeing Messi, Suarez and Neymar together again would be highly attractive, but he questions whether nostalgia and star power alone are sufficient reasons to make such a deal. A major signing must ultimately be judged against its cost, expected contribution and longer-term value.
Age is another factor. Players naturally face increasing physical demands as their careers progress, although some exceptional individuals have continued to perform at an elite level well beyond the age normally associated with a player’s peak. Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are examples of footballers who have repeatedly challenged those expectations, but Hislop regards such longevity as exceptional rather than something that can be assumed for every ageing star.
For Inter Miami, Neymar’s arrival could offer clear commercial possibilities, especially because of his established relationship with Messi and Suarez. Yet the club would also need to weigh his recent injury history and current level of performance against the financial commitment involved.
At present, Neymar’s next destination remains unclear. His Santos contract situation leaves the door open to a move, while the possibility of joining Messi and Suarez in Miami has added another layer of intrigue to the Brazilian’s future.
If the transfer eventually happens, it would recreate one of football’s most recognisable attacking partnerships on American soil. The reunion would undoubtedly generate excitement, but whether it would represent a successful long-term investment for Inter Miami and MLS would depend on far more than the three names appearing together on the same team sheet.
