Christian Lundgaard emerged victorious from one of the most unpredictable races of the 2026 IndyCar season at Road America, turning apparent disaster into triumph in remarkable fashion.
The Arrow McLaren driver appeared to have thrown away any chance of victory after sustaining a broken front wing and a punctured tyre during first-lap contact. Yet a combination of excellent strategy, well-timed caution periods and relentless pace transformed his afternoon. When race leader Marcus Armstrong suffered a heartbreaking mechanical failure with fewer than four laps remaining, Lundgaard seized the opportunity before surviving a tense one-lap restart to claim his second victory of the campaign.
The result significantly strengthened the Dane’s championship ambitions. Although Alex Palou remains firmly in control of the title race, Lundgaard reduced the deficit to 77 points, ensuring the fight remains alive heading into the second half of the season.
Not everyone left Wisconsin celebrating, however. Here are the biggest winners and losers from a dramatic afternoon at the XPEL Grand Prix.

Winner: Christian Lundgaard
Sometimes fortune favours the prepared.
Lundgaard’s race looked effectively over before the opening lap had even been completed after contact damaged his front wing and left him with a puncture. Rather than panic, Arrow McLaren executed a perfectly judged recovery strategy.
The team’s immediate decision to replace the damaged wing and switch onto fresh alternate tyres proved crucial. More importantly, strategist Kyle Moyer adapted brilliantly as five caution periods continually reshaped the complexion of the race.
Instead of simply recovering into the points, Lundgaard gradually found himself back inside the leading group. By the closing laps he was running second and perfectly positioned when Marcus Armstrong’s Meyer Shank Racing Honda suffered its devastating mechanical failure.
Lundgaard still had work to do. The ensuing caution produced a one-lap sprint to the finish, with Team Penske’s David Malukas applying heavy pressure. The Dane, however, executed the restart flawlessly to secure a victory that had seemed impossible only two hours earlier.
Championship-wise, it could prove one of the defining drives of the season.
Loser: Pato O’Ward and Nolan Siegel
Arrow McLaren celebrated victory, but the team’s other two entries endured frustrating afternoons.
Pato O’Ward qualified ninth and appeared capable of challenging near the front, yet an unfavourable strategic sequence left him mired in traffic for much of the race. He eventually crossed the line in 12th, extending an inconsistent campaign that has still failed to produce a podium finish.
For a driver widely regarded as one of IndyCar’s elite talents, that statistic is becoming increasingly concerning, particularly when teammate Lundgaard has already claimed two victories and four podiums this season.
Nolan Siegel’s result was arguably even crueller.
The young American arguably enjoyed his strongest overall IndyCar weekend to date. He qualified seventh—fastest of the three Arrow McLaren drivers—and displayed competitive pace throughout practice and the race.
Unfortunately, his afternoon unravelled during the final-lap restart when contact with Josef Newgarden left him spinning into retirement from what had looked set to be a top-10 finish.
Although the final result of 21st masks his performance, there were genuine positives for Siegel to take away during an important contract year.
Winner: Alexander Rossi
Alexander Rossi quietly produced one of the drives of the race.
Ed Carpenter Racing had shown little indication of being a contender around the 4.014-mile Road America circuit, while Rossi’s qualifying performance—25th on the grid—suggested damage limitation would be the objective.
Things appeared to worsen when teammate Christian Rasmussen retired early with a mechanical problem.
Rossi, however, avoided similar issues and steadily worked his way through the field using intelligent strategy and consistent pace. His sixth-place finish matched his best result of the season and halted a disappointing sequence of four consecutive finishes of 17th or lower.
While it may not attract the same headlines as Lundgaard’s victory, it represented an encouraging afternoon for both driver and team.
Loser: Marcus Armstrong
Few drivers deserved victory more than Marcus Armstrong.
The Meyer Shank Racing driver had been among the quickest throughout the weekend, topping Friday practice before qualifying third and executing an almost faultless race.
With fewer than four laps remaining he held a comfortable 2.7-second lead and appeared destined to secure his maiden IndyCar victory.
Instead, an engine-related mechanical failure abruptly ended his race.
Honda Racing Corporation US president David Salters accepted responsibility afterwards, publicly apologising to Armstrong and Meyer Shank Racing while confirming a full investigation would take place.
It was another cruel chapter in Armstrong’s IndyCar career. Earlier this season he narrowly missed victory in the Indianapolis 500, and Road America represented another golden opportunity slipping away through circumstances beyond his control.
The disappointment was compounded by the championship implications. Rather than scoring a victory and a substantial haul of points, Armstrong dropped to 24th in the race classification and slipped outside the championship’s top ten.
The result may be brutal, but his pace suggests a breakthrough victory is only a matter of time.
The Golden Horseshoe: Alex Palou
Alex Palou once again demonstrated why champions rarely endure truly disastrous weekends.
The Chip Ganassi Racing driver secured a fifth consecutive pole position—an achievement not seen since Alex Zanardi strung together six straight poles across the 1996 and 1997 seasons—and initially looked untouchable, comfortably leading the opening phase of the race.
His afternoon appeared to unravel when he received a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
Ordinarily, such an error would have dropped him well down the order. Instead, a caution period one lap later effectively neutralised much of the damage, allowing the championship leader to recover into contention.
Although victory ultimately escaped him, Palou still salvaged fifth place—an excellent return given the circumstances.
Perhaps more importantly, he limited the championship damage. While Lundgaard and Malukas gained a handful of points, title rivals Kyle Kirkwood and Pato O’Ward both finished outside the top ten, ensuring Palou retained a commanding advantage at the head of the standings.
Championships are often won on difficult days rather than dominant ones, and Road America was another reminder of Palou’s remarkable ability to extract the maximum from challenging circumstances.
