Ronaldo Demands Punishment After Portugal Camp Exit

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over his departure from Portugal’s latest national-team camp, offering a detailed account of the events that led to his decision and accepting responsibility for his own actions.

In a lengthy 10-page statement shared on social media, the 41-year-old forward spoke candidly about broken promises, disagreements with the coaching staff, his frustration over being asked to warm up without being brought on, and his decision to leave the camp. He also apologised to Portugal’s supporters and his international team-mates, while insisting that the consequences of his actions should be assessed according to the rules.

Ronaldo said he had originally prepared a message for the Portuguese public to be delivered after the 2026 World Cup. That message, he explained, remains with him and will be shared when he eventually decides to end his international career.

According to Ronaldo, after Portugal’s return from the United States following the World Cup, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation asked him to reconsider his decision to leave international football. He was told that the federation still wanted him to remain part of the national team.

The federation president also sought Ronaldo’s opinion on the appointment of the current head coach. Ronaldo said he had considered the coach the ideal candidate and was pleased when the appointment was eventually made.

The new coach later contacted Ronaldo and arranged a face-to-face meeting. During that meeting, Ronaldo was told that the coach had faith in him and regarded his presence as an important part of his plans. A specific arrangement was discussed, under which Ronaldo would play the opening and final matches, with his workload managed because of his physical condition.

The coach also suggested that Ronaldo should not travel with the squad for matches in Norway and Denmark. Instead, he would remain in Portugal after playing the first match and rejoin the squad ahead of the fixture at the Estádio do Dragão.

Ronaldo rejected the proposal. He said that, regardless of whether he remained captain, staying behind while the rest of the squad travelled abroad would not set the right example. After further discussion, the coach eventually agreed with his position.

Ronaldo said Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho was present during those discussions. He added that the coach had previously reported to Coutinho during the season and that Coutinho had also played a role in his appointment as the club’s coach in 2025.

The situation appeared settled when the training camp began. Ronaldo recalled another meeting at his home in Lisbon, describing the conversation as calm and consistent with the principles previously agreed.

He subsequently played the match at the Estádio José Alvalade. After being substituted, he said he caused no problems and personally handed the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes. At the time, Ronaldo said, he had not imagined that he might already be taking some of his final steps as a player and captain of Portugal.

His priority that day, he stressed, was simply to win.

The disagreement intensified during the match in Norway. Ronaldo said that, while the squad was having lunch, an assistant coach approached him and said the head coach wanted to speak to him. To his surprise, the coach asked whether he was prepared to play for around 30 minutes.

Ronaldo had been focusing on his physical recovery and had expected not to play. Nevertheless, he agreed to the request. He said the decision fell outside his original recovery and training plan, particularly because he had been expected to play the following match at the Estádio do Dragão.

After the interval, Ronaldo began warming up. He waited as the minutes passed, but was never called upon to enter the match.

In his account, that was the point at which he felt the coach had broken his promise.

Ronaldo admitted that his frustration affected his behaviour after the match. He did not go over to greet the supporters, saying that he simply wanted the game to end in victory and then wanted to be left alone.

He accepted full responsibility for that decision and apologised to the Portuguese supporters, as well as those who had travelled to watch him regardless of their nationality.

Forty-eight hours later, Ronaldo said, he met the coach and Simão Coutinho for another discussion. He described the meeting as frank and direct, with all sides speaking openly.

According to Ronaldo, an agreement was reached on how the matter would be resolved. The coach would explain the situation at a press conference and, crucially, would confirm that Ronaldo had not refused to play. He would also acknowledge that making Ronaldo warm up without subsequently bringing him on had been a mistake.

Ronaldo said the coach embraced him at the end of the meeting and promised to repeat the same explanation publicly. It was also agreed that Ronaldo would not play against Denmark but would feature in the match at the Estádio do Dragão.

However, Ronaldo said the subsequent meeting did not reflect the tone of their private conversation.

He described hearing comments and witnessing what he regarded as aggressive behaviour, saying the attitude was markedly different from what the coach had displayed the previous day. A summary of the earlier discussions was later prepared following a video meeting involving the coach, Coutinho and Tiago Craveiro. Ronaldo said he approved the document and handed it to the coach at his request.

Ronaldo also reproduced eight points that he said reflected the coach’s position. Among them was the acknowledgement that the plan for Ronaldo’s involvement with the national team had originally been proposed by the coach himself. The coach also recognised Ronaldo’s longstanding commitment to Portugal and his influence on the national side over more than two decades.

The coach reportedly said Ronaldo had accepted the proposed plan and had never questioned his decisions. He was described as professional and committed.

The coach also explained that Ronaldo had not initially been scheduled to play against Norway. However, after assessing his physical condition, he believed Ronaldo had recovered sufficiently and warned him that he might have to use him.

Most significantly, the coach admitted that using a player of Ronaldo’s stature only as a warm-up option without subsequently bringing him onto the pitch had been a mistake. He said he would not make the same decision again.

The coach also made clear that he wanted Ronaldo to remain part of the national team and valued his contribution.

Ronaldo, however, said the account contained no acknowledgement that the coach had apologised to him. He considered that another broken promise.

Rather than waiting for another assurance that might not be honoured, Ronaldo decided to leave the training camp.

For the Portugal captain, the central issue was trust. He said he could accept difficult truths, but wanted those truths to be communicated directly.

Ronaldo recalled speaking to the federation president and the coach on the morning of the press conference. He said he had made his position clear: if they no longer wanted him in the squad, they only needed to tell him openly. He would have accepted the decision without resentment.

Instead, he said, both men had rejected the suggestion and told him that he still had a place in the national team.

Ronaldo also stressed that, throughout almost 25 years of his career, he had never interfered with the technical or tactical decisions of a national-team coach or official. Whether he agreed with a decision or not, he said he respected it.

But when commitments made directly to him were not honoured, he felt that remaining with the team was no longer the right choice.

He apologised to his team-mates for leaving the camp, acknowledging that he should not have walked away despite the breakdown in trust. He also apologised once again to the people of Portugal.

At the same time, Ronaldo said the broken promise had affected him so strongly that he believed his continued presence could become harmful to the team. He therefore did what he had previously said he would do if he felt he was no longer contributing: he packed his bags and left.

Perhaps the strongest part of his statement was his willingness to face punishment.

Ronaldo said the Portuguese Football Federation should assess the consequences of his actions and punish him if necessary. He argued that the punishment should not be reduced simply because of his status. As captain, he said, he carries additional responsibility, and the rules must apply equally to everyone.

He has already apologised, but accepts that actions have consequences.

Ronaldo also addressed discussions surrounding a possible farewell appearance for him. He said he had heard that the federation wanted to give him an appropriate opportunity to say goodbye to Portuguese supporters.

Yet he insisted that, when he thinks about the national team, he thinks first about competition rather than farewell ceremonies.

He recalled an especially difficult moment when he learned of his father’s death while attending a national-team training camp. Ronaldo said he chose to remain with the squad until the following day’s match was completed, arguing that his commitment to his country had led him to make a decision he would not have made for a club side.

For that reason, Ronaldo has not closed the door on Portugal.

If he remains physically fit, continues to play and score for his club, and completes any suspension imposed on him, he said he will be ready to return to the national team and compete for victories as he has always done.

His message was therefore not one of immediate retirement, but of frustration, accountability and continued commitment to Portugal.

Ronaldo accepts responsibility for leaving the camp and for failing to greet supporters after the match. At the same time, he has made clear that he believes broken promises damaged the trust between himself and the coaching staff.

Despite the dispute, his desire to represent Portugal remains intact. If selected and available after any suspension, Ronaldo says he will be ready to put on the national shirt again and fight for his country.
