Ronaldo Handed Ban but Set to Avoid Missing Portugal Matches
Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine after leaving the national team camp without permission. However, the punishment is unlikely to affect his availability for Portugal’s upcoming matches, as a significant portion of the suspension period has already elapsed.
The decision has brought some relief to supporters of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who remains one of the most influential figures in Portuguese football.
The incident occurred in September, when the 41-year-old captain withdrew from Portugal’s Nations League squad. After being denied the opportunity to come on as a substitute against Norway, Ronaldo learned that he would also be left out of the starting line-up for the match against Denmark on 1 October. He subsequently decided to leave the national team camp.
The move sparked considerable debate in Portuguese football, raising questions about team discipline, the responsibilities of a national captain and Ronaldo’s relationship with the coaching staff. The matter was eventually referred to the disciplinary committee of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), which imposed the suspension and fine.
Ronaldo Accuses Coach of Breaking Promises
Explaining his decision to leave the camp, Ronaldo accused Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of breaking promises made to him on two occasions. He described the situation as a serious breach of trust, suggesting that disagreements over his role in the team had influenced his decision.
Jesus, however, denied having reached any agreement with Ronaldo. Although the two sides have offered differing accounts of the dispute, the possibility of the forward returning to the national team remains open.
Federation Takes Ronaldo’s Remorse into Account
The FPF disciplinary committee said Ronaldo’s remorse, contribution to football and achievements throughout his career had been considered when determining the punishment.
During the disciplinary proceedings, Ronaldo submitted details of his awards and career accomplishments as part of his defence. In an earlier statement, he had also acknowledged his mistake and referred to apologising to his team-mates and supporters. He reportedly accepted that his conduct warranted punishment.
His willingness to accept responsibility, alongside his contribution to football, was among the factors considered by the disciplinary committee. The decision nevertheless underlines the importance the federation places on discipline among players representing the national team.
There is also a favourable development for Ronaldo regarding the duration of the suspension. The punishment took effect on the day of Portugal’s match against Denmark, meaning that 19 of the 30 days had already elapsed. According to the report, the remaining period is not expected to force him to miss any of Portugal’s forthcoming fixtures.
Portugal Keen to Welcome Ronaldo Back
The Portuguese Football Federation has expressed a desire to resolve the dispute and bring Ronaldo back into the national set-up. FPF president Pedro Proença has indicated that the governing body remains interested in restoring the forward’s place in the team.
Speaking to Portuguese newspaper Record, Proença said the federation wanted Ronaldo to return once the matter had been resolved.
His comments suggest that, despite the disciplinary action, the federation is keen to avoid a lasting breakdown in its relationship with one of the country’s most celebrated footballers.
The immediate challenge is to resolve the differences between Ronaldo and the coaching staff. Their ability to reach an understanding could prove important as Portugal prepares for its upcoming international commitments.
Ronaldo’s Record Continues to Define His Legacy
Ronaldo has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, making him the leading goalscorer in men’s international football. His remarkable record has established him as one of the most successful players in the history of the national team.
He played a major role in Portugal’s triumph at the 2016 European Championship and helped the country win two UEFA Nations League titles. His goals, leadership and sustained performances have been central to Portugal’s success on the international stage.
Despite being 41, Ronaldo remains a prominent figure in Portuguese football. His experience and scoring record continue to make him an important player, although his future involvement will also depend on maintaining a constructive relationship with the coaching staff and federation.
At club level, Ronaldo represents Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, which he joined in December 2022. His contract with the club has since been extended, allowing him to continue his career in the Saudi Pro League while maintaining his international ambitions.
The departure from Portugal’s national team camp has become a controversial episode in Ronaldo’s career. Nevertheless, the suspension is not expected to disrupt his immediate international schedule. Attention will now turn to whether the player, coach and federation can settle their differences and move forward together.
