Last season, the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) witnessed a unique crossover between cricket and cinema, as renowned film star Shakib Khan took centre stage as the owner of the Dhaka Capitals. Although the team did not secure major victories on the field, Shakib’s presence in the stands brought considerable excitement to fans, creating a bridge between cricket enthusiasts and cinema lovers. His engagement with the league, from player support to match-day appearances, became a talking point throughout the tournament.
During the previous season, Shakib’s management style drew praise. No complaints were reported regarding player selections or financial dealings, and while the Capitals’ on-field results were modest, the franchise was noted for its organisational efficiency. Fans and commentators alike recognised that King Khan’s leadership had a stabilising effect on the team, even if ultimate triumphs were elusive.
However, recent developments confirm that Shakib Khan is no longer associated with the Dhaka Capitals. At the player auction held on Sunday at the Radisson Hotel, speculation grew around his absence. Franchise sources have clarified that Shakib has stepped away from ownership. Previously, Remark Harlan held the franchise; ownership has now transferred to Champion Sports. SK Films, Shakib Khan’s company, confirmed that he had long resigned from the director position at Remark-Harlan and is no longer involved with the team in any capacity.
The BPL player auction also marked preparations for the upcoming season, which will feature six teams: Dhaka Capitals, Sylhet Titans, Rangpur Riders, Noakhali Express, Rajshahi Warriors, and Chattogram Royals. Notably, Noakhali Express will make its debut this season. Dhaka Capitals have re-signed with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and are expected to field a competitive squad despite the change in leadership.
Shakib Khan had previously attended the player auction, expressing confidence that his team would strengthen and emerge as title contenders. His absence this season marks a significant change, and fans will be keen to see how the Capitals adapt under Champion Sports’ management.
The BPL 2026 season is scheduled to commence on 26 December, with the final slated for 23 January.
