Tottenham Find Winning Formula Through Team Unity
Tottenham Hotspur secured their first victory of the English Premier League season with a 3-1 win over Coventry City on Monday night, with head coach Roberto De Zerbi believing that improved team spirit and a stronger sense of togetherness are beginning to transform the side.
The Italian manager said open discussions among the players before their match against Manchester United, followed by a team-building trip to Marbella in Spain, had helped create a more united dressing room. For De Zerbi, the significance of the victory extended beyond the three points, offering evidence that Tottenham could compete successfully in the Premier League if the players continued to give their best.
Speaking after the match, De Zerbi highlighted two particularly important developments. First, his players had begun to recognise that they were capable of winning matches just like other Premier League sides. Second, they had seen the benefits of maintaining the level of commitment shown over the previous fortnight.
The manager also revealed that the squad had held an important meeting on the eve of their visit to Old Trafford, during which they discussed their situation and the responsibilities facing them.
He stressed that progress would be impossible unless the players accepted responsibility for their performances and worked collectively to address the team’s difficulties.
De Zerbi’s efforts to strengthen relationships within the squad continued last week when he took the players to Marbella for training in warmer conditions and activities designed to improve their understanding of one another. The trip gave the squad an opportunity to spend time together away from the usual pressures of competitive football.
Describing the experience, De Zerbi said the week had been particularly important because the players had been able to build closer relationships and learn to function more like a family.
He explained that footballers needed to do more than simply carry out their individual duties when matches became difficult. Instead of behaving like 11 robots, they had to fight for one another as friends and brothers. That sense of mutual commitment, he suggested, could make a decisive difference when a team faced pressure on the pitch.
Tottenham’s performance against Coventry offered encouragement that the approach was beginning to produce results. The visitors took the lead through a fine goal from James, only for Jack Rudoni to bring Coventry level. Tottenham subsequently regained control, with Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies scoring to secure the 3-1 victory.
The match also provided an important boost through the return of key players. James Maddison scored after making his first start in 536 days, marking a significant personal milestone after a lengthy absence from the starting line-up. Dejan Kulusevski also returned to action as a substitute after recovering from a serious injury that had kept him out since May.
