Mick Schumacher has revealed he is continuing his rookie IndyCar Series campaign while managing a painful wrist injury sustained during the season opener at St Petersburg.
The incident occurred on the opening lap of the race, when a multi-car collision—triggered by Sting Ray Robb—caught Schumacher in the chaos. While initially appearing routine in the context of a congested street-circuit start, the crash has since proved more consequential. The German confirmed that a fragment of bone in his left wrist broke off in the impact, leaving him in persistent discomfort.
“Every time I step out of the car, I’m in pain,” Schumacher explained in an interview with Sky Germany. “It’s far from ideal, but it’s something I have to manage for now.”

ToggleSurgery delayed amid demanding calendar
With the IndyCar calendar offering little respite, Schumacher has elected to postpone surgery until the end of the season. The decision underscores both the physical demands of the series and his determination to complete his campaign uninterrupted.
The injury has forced him to adapt his driving style, placing greater reliance on his right hand. Over long race distances—particularly on physically punishing street and oval circuits—this imbalance can prove exhausting, both mentally and physically.
Hand and wrist injuries are not uncommon in IndyCar. Schumacher’s own driver coach, Ryan Briscoe, suffered a similar fracture during his career, highlighting the strain these high-speed, high-downforce machines place on drivers.
Mixed results but promising signs
Schumacher’s transition from Formula 1 to IndyCar has been closely watched. While results have been inconsistent, there have been glimpses of clear potential—most notably a fourth-place qualifying performance at Phoenix Raceway.
Schumacher’s 2026 IndyCar results so far
| Event | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| St Petersburg | DNF | First-lap crash, wrist injury sustained |
| Phoenix | 18th | Qualified 4th |
| Round 3 | 22nd | Learning phase continues |
| Round 4 | 24th | Challenging race conditions |
| Round 5 | 17th | Incremental progress |
Despite the modest finishes, Schumacher remains philosophical. Rather than dwelling on results or external criticism, he has chosen to focus on development and adaptation.
Positive paddock response
Interestingly, Schumacher noted that the reaction within the paddock has been more encouraging than he anticipated. Away from the intense scrutiny that often accompanies Formula 1, he has found a more supportive environment in IndyCar.
“I’ve actually stayed away from the headlines,” he admitted. “Being here, a bit removed from everything, helps. And the feedback within the paddock has been surprisingly positive.”
He added that the experience—setbacks included—has accelerated his learning curve. “You’re going to make mistakes. What matters is learning from them and continuing to move forward.”
Determined to push on
While the injury remains a significant challenge, Schumacher’s resolve appears undiminished. Backed by a supportive team and buoyed by gradual progress, he is committed to seeing out the season before undergoing the necessary medical procedure.
In a championship known for its intensity and unpredictability, Schumacher’s perseverance may yet prove as valuable as outright speed.
