O’Ward Hails Arrow McLaren Masterclass

Pato O’Ward praised a “textbook” performance from Arrow McLaren after claiming his first IndyCar victory of the 2026 season in the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, leading home team-mate Christian Lundgaard to secure the organisation’s maiden one-two finish in the series.

The Mexican driver produced a composed and clinical drive in the No. 5 Chevrolet, capitalising on a rare mistake from Lundgaard before controlling proceedings across the 90-lap contest around the 2.258-mile, 13-turn Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Victory marked O’Ward’s first podium finish of the campaign, ending a run of remarkable consistency that had yielded six top-five finishes without a visit to the podium’s top step. The result also significantly strengthens his championship challenge with seven races remaining.

Mid-race opportunity proves decisive

The pivotal moment arrived on Lap 42.

For much of the race, O’Ward had shadowed pole-sitter Lundgaard, with the two Arrow McLaren drivers evenly matched on pace. Knowing that overtaking opportunities would be limited, O’Ward patiently waited for an opening rather than forcing the issue.

That chance came when Lundgaard struggled with an increasingly unstable rear end through Turn 2. O’Ward immediately closed the gap before completing a decisive move a few corners later, taking a lead he would never surrender.

Reflecting on the move after the race, O’Ward admitted patience had been central to his strategy.

“I was positioning myself to pounce on an opportunity whenever he would make a mistake,” O’Ward explained. “So I was banking on that he was going to make one, and he did. That’s what ultimately gave me the opportunity, and I took full advantage of it. It’s always more fun to do it on track over a pit stop sequence or something.”

Rather than relying on pit strategy or fuel-saving tactics, O’Ward secured the lead through outright racecraft, underlining the strength of Arrow McLaren’s pace throughout the weekend.

Flawless pit crew execution

While the overtake proved decisive, O’Ward was equally quick to praise the mechanics who ensured the victory was never placed in jeopardy.

Arrow McLaren has endured occasional inconsistencies during pit stops earlier in the season, but the Mid-Ohio performance represented one of its cleanest operational displays of the year.

Each stop was executed without error, allowing O’Ward to retain track position despite pressure from Lundgaard and the chasing pack.

“It’s great that the first podium of the year for me is a win,” O’Ward said.

“We’ve had performances, and I think today was a textbook showing of execution. I want to give it to my guys in the pits; they were phenomenal.

“I know they’ve been working so hard because this year that has been a bit of a challenge, and I know they’re working so hard to give me the pit stops that they gave me today.

“I really want to recognise that because they make or break my race. They truly allowed me to fight my way and keep my position today as we were fighting on track.

“Obviously the cars have been strong all weekend. It’s been a very strong weekend for all three cars. It was a matter of being perfect.”

The result rewarded both driver and crew after months of steady progress and underlined Arrow McLaren’s emergence as one of the strongest teams in the paddock.

Championship fight gathers momentum

The victory could prove pivotal in the championship battle.

After 11 rounds of the 18-race season, reigning four-time champion Alex Palou continues to lead the standings, but O’Ward has reduced the deficit to 94 points after collecting the maximum available from Mid-Ohio.

Although the gap remains substantial, O’Ward believes several of the remaining circuits play to Arrow McLaren’s strengths, giving him confidence that further victories are achievable.

“If we keep having weekends like today, certainly so,” he said when asked about his title prospects.

“Nashville has been a great place for me and the team. Portland we’ve been very strong, as well. Markham, we’ve had the best street course results that we’ve had in quite some time this year. I’m excited for Markham. I’m excited for Washington. That one is going to be crazy. Milwaukee, we’ve won there before.

“There’s plenty of opportunities left. I’m not changing my approach. It’s going to be the same as it’s been all year. I didn’t really change it this weekend, either.”

Mid-Ohio demonstrated precisely why Arrow McLaren is viewed as one of IndyCar’s fastest teams in 2026. Both O’Ward and Lundgaard possessed race-winning pace throughout the weekend, but flawless execution ultimately separated victory from second place. For O’Ward, the breakthrough triumph not only ends a lengthy wait for a win but also injects fresh momentum into his championship campaign as the series heads towards a decisive final seven races. With Nashville, Portland, Milwaukee and several circuits that have historically suited both driver and team still to come, Arrow McLaren will believe its challenge is only just beginning.
