Lando Norris has given McLaren’s eagerly anticipated MCL-HY hypercar its first public outing, completing demonstration runs at the Goodwood Festival of Speed as the British manufacturer continues preparations for its return to top-flight endurance racing in 2027.
The reigning Formula 1 World Champion took the wheel of the V6 twin-turbo LMDh prototype on Friday, guiding the car twice up Goodwood’s iconic 1.16-mile hillclimb. The appearance marked the first opportunity for fans to see the new prototype in action after it had previously been limited to private development testing in Italy following its official unveiling earlier this year.
On Saturday, McLaren development driver Grégoire Saucy assumed driving duties in the MCL-HY, while Norris switched to the team’s 2023 Formula 1 challenger, the MCL60, for his own Festival appearances.
Although the prototype completed its runs without incident, neither driver attempted an all-out assault on the hillclimb. With the programme still in its infancy, preserving the car and collecting valuable mileage took priority over outright speed.
McLaren prioritises reliability
The cautious approach underlined just how early McLaren remains in its endurance racing programme. Any unnecessary damage at this stage could significantly disrupt a carefully planned development schedule, particularly as the team prepares for an intensive testing campaign ahead of its FIA World Endurance Championship debut in 2027.
The measured strategy also reflects lessons learned across the LMDh category, where several manufacturers have experienced early setbacks while developing new machinery.
Speaking after his first experience behind the wheel, Norris described the occasion as a memorable milestone.
“My first ever drive in the MCL-HY—an absolute pleasure here at Goodwood. It’s always fantastic to be here, but to drive the McLaren on its public debut is a real honour.
“It’s a huge project for McLaren as we prepare for Le Mans, and getting an early taste of the car is very special. I’d have loved to push a little harder, but Goodwood isn’t the place to take unnecessary risks with a brand-new race car.
“Hopefully one day I’ll get to drive it properly on a circuit and really discover what it’s capable of. I’m incredibly happy for everyone involved in the HY project and wish them every success.”
Goodwood chosen for first public appearance
McLaren Team Principal James Barclay explained that bringing the prototype to Goodwood had always been an ambition, although the decision was only confirmed after the programme consistently met its internal development targets.
“The Goodwood Festival of Speed is the greatest car show on Earth, so naturally we wanted to showcase the car there,” Barclay said.
“However, we’re still at a very early stage in our test programme, so the appearance was far from guaranteed. The team has done an outstanding job achieving every milestone, both on and off the track, which allowed us to make the late decision to bring the MCL-HY to Goodwood and share it with motorsport fans.”
For McLaren, the event represented more than simply a demonstration run. It offered a rare opportunity to introduce the project to supporters while validating systems under public conditions before more demanding circuit testing begins.
Built for endurance
The MCL-HY has been constructed around the latest Oreca LMDh chassis, one of the most successful platforms in modern endurance racing. Oreca also supplies chassis to several other manufacturers competing in the category, including Acura, Alpine, Genesis and Ford.
Power comes from McLaren’s own twin-turbocharged V6 engine working alongside the standardised rear-axle hybrid system mandated under LMDh regulations. Together, the package produces a maximum combined output of 520 kW (approximately 697 bhp), ensuring parity across the championship while allowing manufacturers to showcase their engineering expertise through chassis setup, aerodynamics and engine design.

Testing programme gathers momentum
With the public debut complete, McLaren’s attention now turns towards an exhaustive testing schedule over the coming months.
The programme will include lengthy endurance simulations, including planned 30-hour continuous running tests, designed to expose potential weaknesses before the car enters competitive action.
Barclay previously compared the challenge facing the team to climbing the world’s highest mountain.
“We want to climb Mount Everest and we’ve reached base camp,” he said during this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.
“We’ve prepared exceptionally well, but now the real hard work begins.”
He also stressed that assembling the right personnel has been every bit as important as designing the race car itself.
“The biggest challenge has been building the team. You can invest heavily and build a fantastic race car, but without the right people you’re never going to maximise its potential.”
Experienced driver line-up taking shape
Development responsibilities are currently led by Danish endurance specialist Mikkel Jensen, who has been instrumental in the programme’s early testing. Jensen was absent from Goodwood due to his IMSA SportsCar Championship commitments at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
McLaren has also secured the services of Laurens Vanthoor, one of endurance racing’s most accomplished drivers. The Belgian will combine selected IMSA commitments with Porsche alongside his factory role in McLaren’s World Endurance Championship campaign.
With its first public appearance now successfully completed, the MCL-HY moves into the next phase of development. While there remains considerable work before the car lines up on the Le Mans grid in 2027, its Goodwood debut provided an encouraging glimpse of McLaren’s ambitious return to endurance racing’s premier category and the beginning of a programme determined to challenge for overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
