Italy’s head coach Gennaro Gattuso has been left disappointed after winger Federico Chiesa, aged 28, once again turned down an invitation to join the national team.
With two crucial World Cup qualifying matches ahead—against Moldova and Norway—Gattuso finalised his squad list earlier this week. However, Chiesa’s name was notably absent. The coach later confirmed that the omission was not tactical but rather the player’s own decision.
“I speak to Chiesa frequently. We must all respect the personal decisions we each make and the challenges we face. There’s nothing further to add—that’s simply the truth,” Gattuso explained during a press briefing in Rome.
This marks the second consecutive international window that Chiesa has opted out of. In October, he declined a call-up, citing concerns over his physical condition. Yet, this time, the reason for his withdrawal remains unclear, fuelling speculation among Italian media about potential personal or professional disagreements.
Italy currently sit second in their qualifying group, three points behind leaders Norway. The Azzurri will host Moldova on 13 November before travelling to Oslo to take on Erling Haaland’s Norway on 16 November—a fixture likely to determine the group’s top spot.
Italy’s Upcoming Fixtures:
| Date | Opponent | Venue | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 November 2025 | Moldova | Stadio Olimpico, Rome | Must-win to maintain qualification hopes |
| 16 November 2025 | Norway | Ullevaal Stadium, Oslo | Key clash for top spot in group |
Despite Chiesa’s continued absence, Gattuso expressed optimism about his team’s depth:
“Of course, it’s disappointing not to have a player of Federico’s calibre. But Italy has many young talents eager to step up. The door is always open for him.”
Chiesa, who has been in solid form for his club, is yet to comment publicly on his decision. For now, fans of the Azzurri are left wondering when—or if—the dynamic winger will return to the national fold.
