Bangladesh received a boost in the FIFA rankings just a day after a historic victory over India. In the latest update released on Wednesday evening, Bangladesh climbed three places to 180th position, marking its highest standing in nearly a decade.
The last time Bangladesh achieved a comparable ranking was in March 2016, when the team reached 177th. However, that year’s ranking subsequently fell to 188th. Under the guidance of coach Javier Cabrera, the team has now managed to reclaim some of its former status, thanks in part to a rise in points following the win against India.
Prior to the match, Bangladesh had 894 points; they now have 911. Conversely, India’s points dropped by 18, resulting in a six-place fall in the rankings from 136th to 142nd. This shift highlights the growing competitiveness of South Asian football and reflects Bangladesh’s improved performance on the international stage.
At the top of the rankings, positions one through four remain unchanged, with Spain, Argentina, France, and England holding their spots. Meanwhile, Brazil, five-time world champions, have climbed from seventh to fifth, following a victory against Senegal and a draw with Tunisia in friendly matches earlier this month.
Bangladesh’s rise in the rankings signals a period of steady progress for the national team. With consistent coaching, strategic planning, and improved player performance, the team is gradually making its mark in international football. Experts suggest that maintaining momentum and performing well in upcoming fixtures will be crucial to consolidating this upward trajectory.
