After a difficult week featuring a 2–1 defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League and a 2–0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, Manchester City supporters were desperate for a response. Pep Guardiola’s side duly delivered at the Etihad Stadium, edging past Leeds United 3–2 in a tense and dramatic encounter.
Phil Foden was the undisputed star of the afternoon, scoring twice—including a decisive strike deep into added time after the match had been delicately poised at 2–2. His late winner spared City what would have been another costly slip-up and restored some much-needed calm following a shaky spell.
City dominated the first half with typical fluency and intensity. Barely 59 seconds had passed when Foden found the net with a crisp finish, sending the home crowd into early celebrations. The hosts doubled their lead in the 25th minute through Josko Gvardiol, whose composed strike suggested that City were on course for a comfortable victory.
Leeds, however, produced an inspired second-half resurgence. Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled a goal back in the 49th minute, exploiting a lapse in City’s defensive concentration. As the visitors grew in confidence, their pressing and direct attacking play unsettled City. In the 68th minute, Luka Nmecha completed the comeback with a well-taken finish to level the score at 2–2. During this period, City appeared vulnerable, flirting with the prospect of conceding a third.
But champions find a way. In the 91st minute, Foden struck again, guiding the ball past the Leeds goalkeeper with remarkable composure. City survived more than ten minutes of added time to close out the win and secure a vital three points.
This victory, City’s eighth of the league campaign, lifts Guardiola’s men to second place with 25 points from 13 matches. Arsenal remain top with 29 points from 12 games, while Chelsea sit third with 23 points from the same number of fixtures as City.
Leeds, meanwhile, have now suffered four straight defeats and remain in the relegation zone, sitting 18th with 11 points.
