Ancelotti Stands By Neymar Exclusion

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has firmly defended his controversial decision to leave Neymar out of the national squad, insisting that performance, fitness, and tactical suitability will take precedence over reputation as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Italian manager addressed the issue during a press conference in Boston ahead of Brazil’s high-profile friendly against the France national football team. While the fixture is intended as a key step in Brazil’s World Cup build-up, much of the attention has centred on Neymar’s absence, which continues to generate debate across the footballing landscape.

Currently playing for Santos FC, Neymar has yet to be selected under Ancelotti’s tenure. His omission has divided opinion among supporters, analysts, and former internationals. Some argue that his experience and match-winning ability remain indispensable, while others support the manager’s emphasis on form and balance within the squad.

Ancelotti, however, remains resolute. He acknowledged the widespread discussion but underlined that decision-making ultimately lies with him. He stressed that football is shaped by judgement rather than sentiment, and that selecting a national team requires difficult, often unpopular choices in pursuit of collective success.

The debate has been further fuelled by outspoken support for Neymar from several Brazilian greats. Romário, a central figure in Brazil’s 1994 World Cup victory, argued that a player of Neymar’s calibre should be included regardless of his current physical condition, citing his creativity and ability to change games single-handedly.

In a similar vein, Ronaldo Nazário—widely known as “The Phenomenon”—expressed confidence that Neymar could still play a decisive role if he regains fitness. He suggested that players of Neymar’s quality often prove invaluable in high-pressure tournament scenarios.

Support from within the current squad has also been notable. Midfielder Fabinho described Neymar as Brazil’s most naturally gifted footballer, capable of influencing matches in moments of brilliance. Such endorsements highlight the enduring faith in Neymar’s abilities despite ongoing concerns about his form and fitness.

However, the path back to the national team is narrowing. Neymar is expected to feature in just eight remaining Série A fixtures for Santos before the World Cup squad is finalised. His next appearance, scheduled for 2 April against Remo-PA, is widely regarded as the beginning of a stretch in which he must demonstrate both physical readiness and consistent high-level performance.

As Brazil continue to shape their squad for the global stage, the discussion surrounding Neymar remains a focal point. For Ancelotti, the objective is clear: construct a disciplined and cohesive team capable of competing at the highest level. For Neymar, the task is equally clear—deliver exceptional performances and reaffirm his place among the elite of Brazilian football.
