The Austrian national football team is finalising its detailed preparations for its highly anticipated return to the global stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing a definitive end to a generation-spanning twenty-eight-year absence from the prestigious tournament. On Monday, 18 May 2026, Austria’s head coach, Ralf Rangnick, officially announced his final twenty-six-man squad tasked with leading the nation’s campaign across North America. This upcoming tournament marks the eighth time in history that Austria has successfully qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals, with their last appearance in the competition dating back to the 1998 tournament in France.
The newly unveiled selection consists of a highly competitive group of players currently active across Europe’s top domestic leagues. Headlining the squad is the veteran Real Madrid defender and national captain David Alaba, who has long served as the symbolic figurehead and foundational pillar of modern Austrian football on the international circuit.
