Brazil Coach Rejects Alternative Selections For Neymar

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed concerns regarding Neymar’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, confirming that the forward remains an integral part of the squad and will not be replaced. Speaking to journalists ahead of a friendly match against Panama, the Italian manager clarified the status of the 34-year-old attacker, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation for an injury.

The Brazilian national team began its pre-World Cup training camp in Rio de Janeiro on 27 May. However, due to his ongoing recovery process, Neymar has been unable to participate in full outdoor training sessions alongside his teammates.

Medical Status and Initial Diagnosis

Ancelotti revealed that the national team management had been formally notified by Neymar’s club regarding an oedema (swelling-related issue) prior to the official announcement of the World Cup squad. Despite the physical setback, the manager expressed confidence in the player’s recovery timeline and mental state.

“We believe he will recover as quickly as possible. Mentally, he is in very good spirits.”

This assessment follows a statement from the head of the Brazilian medical staff, Dr Rodrigo Lasmar, who initially indicated that Neymar might require a recovery period of two to three weeks. Such a timeline would effectively rule the forward out of Brazil’s opening Group C fixture against Morocco, scheduled for 13 June.

Ancelotti Clarifies Squad Selection Policy

Ancelotti, however, remains more optimistic than the medical staff regarding the duration of the player’s absence. He explicitly ruled out the possibility of calling up a replacement player to the squad, stating that Neymar would remain with the group throughout his recovery.

“Neymar will stay with us until he is fully recovered. We believe he could be ready for the first match of the World Cup. Even if he cannot make it, he will certainly be ready for the second match. It is absolutely certain that no alternative player will be taken in his place.”

The decision has triggered debate within Brazilian football circles, particularly because Ancelotti had previously asserted prior to the squad announcement that he would not select individuals who were not entirely fit. Critics have questioned why Neymar was included while other injured players were omitted.

Ancelotti defended his selection criteria by clarifying his earlier comments on physical readiness:

“I spoke about being 100 per cent physically fit, but perhaps I did not explain it clearly enough. What I meant was that I could call up someone who would become fit in time for the World Cup. Unfortunately, Eder Militão, Rodrygo, and Estêvão will not be fully fit by that time.”

Brazil’s Group C Tournament Schedule

The five-time world champions have been drawn into Group C for the tournament. Following their opening match against Morocco, Brazil will face Haiti before concluding their group stage fixtures against Scotland.
