IMSA Title Battles Intensify

The 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship has entered its decisive phase following an action-packed weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, with championship battles tightening across every category as the season heads towards its conclusion.

With only three rounds remaining for the GTP and LMP2 classes, every point has become increasingly valuable. Meanwhile, the GTD Pro and GTD championships still have four events left, including the traditional GT-only weekend at Virginia International Raceway (VIR), which could prove pivotal in determining this year’s champions.

While several teams have established themselves as title favourites through consistency, none of the four classes can yet be considered settled. Manufacturer, team and driver championships all remain mathematically open, promising an intense run to the finish.

GTP: Cadillac Holds the Upper Hand

The headline category continues to be led by Cadillac, with Jack Aitken emerging as the driver to beat after an impressive and consistent campaign in the #31 Whelen Cadillac.

Aitken’s advantage has been built through a combination of outright pace and reliability, giving him a healthy cushion over Porsche challenger Laurin Heinrich. Nick Yelloly and Renger van der Zande remain firmly in contention for Acura Meyer Shank Racing, while Porsche Penske Motorsport’s Julien Andlauer and Felipe Nasr cannot yet be ruled out with three races still remaining.

Cadillac also enjoys an important lead in the manufacturers’ standings, although Porsche continues to apply pressure and remains within striking distance should the balance of results swing over the final events.

LMP2: Consistency Proving Decisive

The LMP2 championship remains one of the closest contests in IMSA.

CrowdStrike Racing by APR’s George Kurtz and Alex Quinn have combined consistency with strong race pace to establish a narrow championship advantage, but their lead remains far from comfortable.

Jeremy Clarke and Tom Dillmann continue to keep the pressure on for Inter Europol Competition, while AO Racing’s Dane Cameron and P.J. Hyett remain firmly within striking distance.

With identical ORECA chassis throughout the field, strategy, tyre management and execution during pit stops are likely to prove decisive during the final three rounds.

GTD Pro: BMW Leads a Fierce Fight

The GTD Pro championship has arguably delivered the most competitive racing of the season, with multiple manufacturers capable of winning on any given weekend.

Paul Miller Racing’s Connor De Phillippi and Neil Verhagen currently lead the standings aboard the BMW M4 GT3, but their advantage remains slim.

Corvette Racing’s experienced pairing of Tommy Milner and Nicky Catsburg continues to mount a serious challenge, while Porsche, represented by Harry King and Nick Tandy, also remains firmly in title contention.

Just five points separate third, fourth and fifth in the standings, underlining how little margin exists entering the final four races.

Chevrolet currently leads BMW and Porsche in the manufacturers’ championship thanks to the combined strength of its Corvette Racing programme.

GTD: Aston Martin Eyes Championship Glory

The GTD category remains equally competitive despite Eduardo ‘Dudu’ Barrichello building a useful championship lead.

Driving for Heart of Racing Team, Barrichello has combined speed with remarkable consistency throughout the campaign, placing Aston Martin in an excellent position to challenge for both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships.

However, Vasser Sullivan’s Benjamin Pedersen and Aaron Telitz remain within striking distance, while Turner Motorsport’s Robby Foley and Patrick Gallagher also continue to apply pressure.

The manufacturers’ battle is even closer. Aston Martin leads Ferrari by just 18 points, with Mercedes-AMG also still firmly involved. The forthcoming VIR weekend, where GT cars race without the prototype classes, could dramatically reshape the championship picture.

Championship Run-In

With the championship entering its closing stages, every race now carries enormous significance. In GTP and LMP2, only three opportunities remain for drivers and teams to overturn the standings, leaving little room for mistakes. GTD Pro and GTD competitors enjoy one additional event, but with points margins so tight across both classes, a single retirement, penalty or strategic error could dramatically alter the title race.

Cadillac, CrowdStrike Racing by APR, Paul Miller Racing and Heart of Racing Team currently occupy the strongest positions in their respective championships. Nevertheless, with endurance racing often decided by reliability, strategy and traffic management as much as outright speed, the battle for the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship remains far from settled.
