Japanese football icon Kazuyoshi Miura has reaffirmed that age is merely a number by scoring in an official competitive match at the age of 59 years and 194 days. The veteran striker found the net for the first time in 1,351 days, cementing his status as the world’s oldest active professional footballer and rewriting the record books once again.
The landmark goal arrived during the Fukushima Prefecture final, where Miura’s side, Fukushima United, delivered a commanding 7-0 victory over Iwaki Furukawa. The dominant performance secured the club’s qualification for the main tournament of this season’s Emperor’s Cup, set to kick off on 19 August.
Entrusted with the captain’s armband, the veteran forward completed more than 50 minutes of action for the first time since joining Fukushima United. His historic moment unfolded seven minutes into the second half with his team already leading 4-0.
The attack was sparked by 23-year-old winger Takatora Einaga, who embarked on an impressive solo run down the right flank, weaving past three defenders before sending a low cut-back into the penalty area. Showing pristine timing, Miura read the play perfectly, burst into the box ahead of the opposition backline, and swept a first-time right-footed shot into the back of the net. The strike marked his first goal in Fukushima United colours.
An emotional scene followed as Miura embraced his youthful teammate Einaga, pointing toward the sky with his trademark smile while teammates rushed to congratulate him. Although it was the fifth goal in a seven-goal rout, Miura’s milestone moment easily stole the spotlight.
Before this match, Miura’s last competitive goal came on 12 November 2022 while representing Suzuka in the Japan Football League. Having launched his professional career back in 1986, the timeless forward has now played across five different decades. Set to celebrate his 60th birthday next February, ‘King Kazu’ continues to prove that his appetite for top-flight football remains completely undiminished.
