Monika’s Return to Strengthen Midfield Balance

Bangladesh are set to face hosts India at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa, with the match scheduled to kick off at 8:00 pm Bangladesh time. Although Bangladesh have already secured a place in the semi-finals of the SAFF competition, the outcome of this fixture will determine whether they progress as group champions or runners-up.

A victory over India would ensure top position in the group, thereby increasing the likelihood of facing a comparatively less formidable opponent in the semi-finals. Conversely, a draw or defeat would see Bangladesh advance as runners-up, potentially leading to a more challenging semi-final encounter against a strong side such as Nepal.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh held a training session at the Don Bosco College ground adjacent to the main stadium. Speaking after the session, defender Shyuli Azim emphasised the significance of the upcoming match. She stated that while qualification for the semi-finals has already been achieved, finishing as group champions remains the primary objective. According to her, securing the top position could allow Bangladesh to avoid facing a strong opponent like Nepal at the next stage.

Shyuli Azim missed the previous match against the Maldives due to severe gastric pain experienced the day before the fixture. She has since recovered and confirmed her readiness to participate in the match against India.

Discussing India’s strengths, Shyuli noted that the hosts possess a strong attacking unit. However, she also pointed out that every team has its vulnerabilities. Bangladesh’s video analysis team has been closely examining India’s weaknesses in order to formulate an effective tactical approach. At the same time, the team is focused on addressing its own defensive shortcomings.

Bangladesh’s defence showed signs of vulnerability in recent matches, a fact acknowledged by Shyuli. She indicated that the head coach has been working extensively with the defenders to correct these errors. The defensive unit is therefore optimistic about delivering a more disciplined performance against India.

The potential return of midfielder Monika Chakma was also highlighted as a positive factor. While Shyuli stressed that executing the team’s overall game plan is more important than individual participation, she acknowledged that Monika’s presence in midfield would enhance the team’s strength and balance. She further stated that the current squad possesses the capability to break down India’s defence and score goals.

On handling the psychological demands of facing a strong opponent like India, Shyuli explained that the presence of experienced players in the squad helps manage pressure effectively. She added that although newer players may feel some degree of pressure, the team approaches every match with equal importance and a clear objective of securing victory.

Regarding changes in the Indian squad compared to previous SAFF tournaments, Shyuli observed that several experienced players are no longer part of the team, with a number of new players having been introduced. Despite this transition, she described India as a well-organised side. She also expressed the view that Bangladesh currently possesses a balanced squad and is fully prepared to deliver its best performance.
