Josef Newgarden reinforced his status as the master of World Wide Technology Raceway by claiming a record-extending sixth victory at the Illinois oval, overcoming rain delays, multiple red flags and fierce late-race pressure from Marcus Ericsson to win a dramatic Bommarito Automotive Group 500.
The Team Penske driver delivered a measured and resilient performance across a race that stretched beyond midnight and was repeatedly interrupted by adverse weather conditions. After 260 laps of strategy, survival and wheel-to-wheel combat, Newgarden crossed the line just 0.6613 seconds ahead of Ericsson to secure the 34th IndyCar victory of his career, moving him further up the all-time winners’ list.
For Ericsson, second place represented his strongest result of the 2026 season after leading a race-high 114 laps and appearing, for long periods, to have the pace required to end his victory drought. Ed Carpenter Racing’s Christian Rasmussen completed the podium after a remarkable charge from 19th on the grid.

Palou Controls Early Stages
Pole-sitter Alex Palou initially looked set to continue his dominant championship campaign. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver controlled the opening phase, leading comfortably from David Malukas and Newgarden.
However, the complexion of the race changed dramatically once traffic became a factor. While attempting to navigate slower cars, Palou lost momentum and Ericsson seized the opportunity to snatch the lead on Lap 47. From that point onwards, the Swedish driver established himself as the race’s dominant force.
Ericsson repeatedly built advantages over Newgarden, managing tyre wear and traffic effectively while maintaining control through multiple pit-stop cycles.
Yet the race never settled into a predictable rhythm.
Weather Causes Chaos
A heavy crash for Graham Rahal triggered a lengthy caution period shortly before rain arrived at the circuit. Officials were forced to red-flag the event on Lap 137 as conditions deteriorated.
After a 38-minute stoppage, the race resumed, only for further showers to create additional uncertainty later in the evening. A second red flag followed on Lap 200, compressing the field and creating a strategic lottery.
The interruptions dramatically altered fuel calculations and pit strategies.
Among the biggest losers was championship leader Palou. Following the second stoppage, fuel issues during the pit sequence dropped him out of contention just as the race entered its decisive phase.
Rasmussen Briefly Threatens
The final restart, with fewer than 50 laps remaining, produced one of the race’s most memorable battles.
Newgarden emerged from the pit cycle with the lead, but Rasmussen immediately challenged. Benefiting from strong pace and a well-timed strategy, the Danish driver launched an aggressive move into Turn 1 and briefly took control.
The Penske driver responded with characteristic determination. After several laps of intense side-by-side racing, Newgarden reclaimed first place and finally began to assert himself at the front.
Ericsson then joined the battle, overtaking Rasmussen to move into second and setting up a straight fight between two Indianapolis 500 winners.
Newgarden Holds Firm
The final 35 laps became a tense duel between Newgarden and Ericsson. The Andretti Global driver remained within striking distance, rarely more than half a second behind, but was unable to find a clear opportunity to attack.
Behind them, Rasmussen secured a career-highlight podium, while Rinus VeeKay delivered Juncos Hollinger Racing’s strongest result in nearly two years with an impressive fourth-place finish.
Scott McLaughlin completed the top five after a late charge on fresher tyres.
As the laps counted down, Newgarden remained flawless. Managing traffic, tyre degradation and relentless pressure, he never offered Ericsson a genuine opening.
When the chequered flag finally fell shortly after midnight, the Tennessee native had added another chapter to his remarkable record at WWTR. On a night defined by changing weather, strategic uncertainty and multiple interruptions, Newgarden once again demonstrated why he remains one of IndyCar’s most formidable oval racers.
