Paraguayan Senator Threatens Mbappé With Legal Action Over Row

The intense battles on the pitch at the World Cup are increasingly being overshadowed by escalating diplomatic and personal friction off it. Following the recent controversy surrounding FIFA’s decision to rescind a red card, a fiery war of words has erupted between France captain Kylian Mbappé and Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla, threatening to spill over into a formal legal arena.

The dispute began in the wake of Paraguay’s narrow 1-0 defeat to France. Visibly frustrated by the result, Senator Amarilla took to social media platform X to launch a highly controversial tirade against the Real Madrid and France forward. In her initial post, she labelled Mbappé a “Cameroonian with a colonial mentality”, an “arrogant person pretending to be French”, and “ugly”.

Although the incendiary post was quickly deleted amid mounting criticism, the friction intensified after Mbappé issued a sharp counter-response. In retaliation, the Paraguayan politician published an uncompromising open letter. Whilst she acknowledged her own wrongdoing in using offensive language, she insisted that her grievances were strictly personal and directed solely at the French captain rather than the nation of France.

Allegations of Unsporting On-Field Behaviour

Senator Amarilla’s letter levelled several serious allegations regarding Mbappé’s conduct both before and during the match. She claimed that the forward had shown premeditated disrespect towards the South American side, allegedly declaring ahead of kick-off, “If we have to play dirty, we will play dirty.” The senator argued that this statement was a collective insult to the entire Paraguayan squad and their footballing integrity.

The accusations extended to his behaviour during the game itself. Amarilla alleged that Mbappé repeatedly demeaned his opponents on the pitch, going so far as to hurl profanities at them in Spanish.

Furthermore, Mbappé’s post-match actions drew sharp criticism. Rather than observing standard post-match etiquette, the French captain reportedly refused to shake hands with the Paraguayan goalkeeper, choosing instead to celebrate the narrow victory independently. “Showing respect to your opponents is a fundamental value of sport,” Amarilla wrote in her letter. “It should be maintained in any situation, whether in victory or defeat, but you failed to do so.”

Regret Over Slurs and Ultimatums of Legal Action

In a moment of self-reflection within the open letter, Amarilla expressed regret for her initial outburst, admitting that anger had clouded her judgement. She conceded that using racially charged and derogatory language was a mistake, which prompted her to remove the original post. She noted that she realised she was perpetuating the very cycle of hatred that she herself had experienced in the past.

Despite this admission, the senator is refusing to back down regarding Mbappé’s subsequent remarks. The striker reportedly dismissed the politician as “inferior” and “unfit for office”, sparking fury from the elected official. Amarilla fiercely defended her status, stating that Mbappé had absolutely no right to demean her position, given that she is a democratically elected representative of the public.

Concluding her letter, the senator accused Mbappé of subjecting her to political and gender-based violence. She has demanded a full, public apology and the immediate retraction of his comments. Should the French forward refuse to comply, Amarilla warned that she is fully prepared to initiate formal legal proceedings against him.
