Mexican police have recovered a man’s decomposing body from the boot of an abandoned vehicle parked in close proximity to the Iran national football team’s base in Tijuana, Mexico. The squad has been training in the city under strict security protocols ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
The Iranian delegation is currently residing at the Marriott Hotel, located near the Caliente Stadium where the team conducts their daily training sessions. The vehicle, a grey Toyota SUV, had been left abandoned since Wednesday in a supermarket parking lot directly opposite the stadium. On Friday (12 June), local authorities were alerted after a strong odour began emanating from the vehicle.
Investigation and Forensic Discovery
Upon arriving at the scene, Mexican police inspected the vehicle and discovered the body wrapped in a black plastic bag inside the boot. Speaking to the news agency AFP, the Tijuana prosecutor’s office confirmed that the deceased exhibited visible signs of physical violence and trauma.
A forensic team equipped with specialised protective suits arrived shortly after to examine the vehicle and gather evidence for the autopsy report. Following the preliminary on-site investigation, the body was removed from the scene.
Iran’s Pre-Tournament Relocation
The Iranian national team was forced to alter its pre-World Cup preparations due to geopolitical factors. Ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran compelled the football federation to cancel its original plans to establish a training camp within the United States. Consequently, the team selected Tijuana, Mexico, as the alternative location for their base camp.
Despite the incident occurring adjacent to their accommodation and training facilities, the team’s scheduled preparations have continued under heightened security measures.
