Heinrich Earns Porsche Factory Promotion

Porsche Penske Motorsport has confirmed a significant reshuffle to its driver line-up for the 2027 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season, with rising German star Laurin Heinrich stepping into a full-time seat aboard the factory-run Porsche 963.

At the same time, experienced Belgian racer Laurens Vanthoor will reduce his programme to endurance events only, marking the end of his full-season commitments in the championship after several successful campaigns with the German manufacturer.

The announcement represents another major milestone in Heinrich’s rapidly accelerating career. The 24-year-old has emerged as one of the standout performers of the current IMSA campaign, underlined by a sensational victory at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca last weekend. Driving for JDC-Miller MotorSports, Heinrich delivered a remarkable late-race charge and executed a decisive overtaking manoeuvre on the final lap to secure victory — the first Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) win recorded by a privateer entrant in the modern IMSA era.

That breakthrough result further strengthened Heinrich’s growing reputation within Porsche’s factory ranks. Earlier this season, he also contributed to victories at both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring as part of Porsche Penske Motorsport’s endurance line-up alongside Julien Andlauer and Felipe Nasr.

Heinrich’s promotion also signals Porsche’s continued commitment to nurturing talent through its customer racing structure. Having risen through the Porsche junior system, the German has become a textbook example of the manufacturer’s long-term development philosophy.

“Porsche has played a fundamental role in my racing career from the very beginning,” Heinrich said following the announcement. “I feel an extremely strong connection to the brand and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to fight for the IMSA title with Porsche Penske Motorsport in 2027.”

Despite his impressive form, Heinrich’s current championship campaign faces a complication later this season. He is set to miss the IMSA round at Watkins Glen due to a scheduling clash with the 24 Hours of Spa, one of the world’s premier GT3 endurance events.

For Vanthoor, meanwhile, the move to a reduced schedule appears to be both strategic and personal. The 34-year-old has enjoyed a highly successful decade as a Porsche factory driver, collecting victories and titles across GT and prototype racing. However, his future ambitions increasingly appear focused on selected marquee events rather than the demands of a full championship campaign.

Vanthoor is also widely expected to feature in McLaren’s forthcoming Hypercar programme in the FIA World Endurance Championship, which is due to begin next season.

“My journey as a Porsche factory driver has brought tremendous success over the past ten years, and I’m hugely grateful for that,” Vanthoor explained. “But I also have a personal dream that I want to pursue moving forward.

“At the same time, I’m genuinely pleased for Laurin Heinrich. He absolutely deserves this opportunity.”

The transition highlights Porsche Penske Motorsport’s evolving long-term strategy as the factory programme balances experienced endurance specialists with a new generation of prototype talent. With Heinrich now stepping into a leading role, Porsche appears determined to secure continuity and competitiveness as IMSA’s fiercely contested GTP era continues to expand.
