The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has confirmed that defender Leonardo Balerdi has been ruled out of the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament after sustaining a significant muscle injury. The development presents a major tactical challenge for the reigning world champions and their manager, Lionel Scaloni, as they finalise their defensive configurations ahead of the global competition.

Official Medical Status and Squad Withdrawal

According to an official statement released by the Argentine national football team management on Saturday 6 June 2026, the central defender underwent diagnostic assessments that revealed an injury to his right calf muscle. The physical setback completely precludes his participation in the tournament, forcing his removal from the travelling squad.

Official Statement From The Argentine Football Team

“The defender Leonardo Balerdi has sustained an injury to the muscle of his right leg and, consequently, he will be unable to remain with the squad selected to participate in the FIFA World Cup.”

The injury necessitates a recovery period that extends beyond the tournament schedule, preventing the player from fulfilling his international duties. Balerdi is expected to focus on his rehabilitation process to regain physical fitness ahead of the upcoming domestic club season.

Defensive Complications For Lionel Scaloni

The loss of Balerdi creates an immediate selection dilemma within the Argentine defensive infrastructure. The centre-back had established himself as an increasingly vital component of Lionel Scaloni’s tactical setup over recent international fixtures, offering reliable cover and structural stability to the backline.

Balerdi’s presence in the squad had become particularly critical due to ongoing fitness concerns surrounding established first-choice central defender Cristian Romero. Romero has been battling a prolonged injury and has yet to achieve full physical recovery or match fitness.

With Romero’s availability for the opening group stage fixtures remaining highly uncertain, Balerdi had been heavily relied upon to anchor the central defence. The simultaneous absence of a fully fit Romero and the complete withdrawal of Balerdi leaves the technical staff with reduced options in central defence, forcing Scaloni to rapidly reconfigure his defensive pairings and tactical schemes to ensure defensive solidity before the tournament commences.

Squad Adjustments and Roster Regulations

Under FIFA tournament regulations, participating member associations are permitted to replace a seriously injured player on their final squad list up to 24 hours before their team’s opening match. This rule provides the coaching staff with a degree of operational flexibility during unexpected injury crises.

Manager Lionel Scaloni and his technical team must now search for an alternative defensive option to fill the vacancy left by Balerdi. The coaching staff is tasked with evaluating potential replacements who can integrate into the team’s established defensive system. The identity of the replacement defender is expected to be announced officially by the Argentine Football Association once the regulatory paperwork is formalised and approved by the tournament directors
