The global sporting community is mourning the loss of Alex Zanardi, who has died at the age of 59 following a prolonged health struggle stemming from a devastating handbike accident in 2020. His passing on 1 May marks the end of one of the most extraordinary and inspirational journeys in modern sport.
Born in 1966 in Bologna and raised in the nearby town of Castel Maggiore, Zanardi’s early life gave little indication of the global impact he would eventually have. Like many Italian drivers, his career began in karting at the age of 14 before he progressed rapidly through the junior single-seater ranks, reaching Italian Formula 3 in 1988 and Formula 3000 by 1991.
That same year, he made his debut in Formula 1 with Jordan, later racing for Minardi and Lotus. Though his Formula 1 career yielded modest results, it served as a stepping stone to far greater success across the Atlantic.
Zanardi’s defining achievements came in American open-wheel racing, where he joined Chip Ganassi Racing in 1996. Competing in the CART championship—now part of the IndyCar Series—he secured back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998, becoming one of the most celebrated drivers of his generation.

His life changed irrevocably on 15 September 2001 at the Lausitzring in Germany. A catastrophic crash during a CART race resulted in the loss of both legs and severe blood loss that nearly claimed his life. Remarkably, Zanardi survived after multiple surgeries and a long recovery, defying medical expectations.
Rather than retreat from public life, he reinvented himself. Returning briefly to touring car racing, he soon found a new calling in handcycling. His determination culminated in a triumphant performance at the 2012 London Paralympics, where he won two gold medals and a silver, cementing his legacy beyond motorsport.
In June 2020, tragedy struck again. While participating in a relay event for Paralympic athletes, Zanardi was involved in a serious road accident that left him with life-threatening injuries. After extensive treatment across several Italian hospitals, he returned home in 2022, though his condition remained largely private in the years that followed.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement, noting that he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones and requesting privacy during their time of grief.
